I remember playing OUTSIDE.. where it's cold and there's wolves.
I remember doing "quests" with my friends to find the biggest rock or fighting with wooden swords with all the kids in the neighborghood (we even did a big "war".
I remember when I was waking up at 2 am to watch Samourai Pizza Cats.
I remember watching "La petite vie" every week with my family and how much we all laugh.
I remember "L'heure JMP" and it's famous : "Flasher les lumières!" (Turning on and off the lights, it sound stupid, but EVERYONE was doing it at the same time).
I remember thinking I had a big week when I had only 30 hours of class.
I remember the tree house, the rocky cliffs and when the lake nearby was actually a lake and not a river.
Ì also remember being small, plumpish and asthmatic....good thing those changed.

I remember when television ads for music offered LP or Cassette as options. In fact, I remember music stores having records for sale, and a smaller selection of cassette tapes. In fact in fact, I remember owning 8-track tapes, and the introduction of cassette tapes as new technology.
I remember the days before VCRs, and owning the first VCR on the block - my dad won it in a sales contest and it was a $400 prize back then.
I remember owning the most powerful personal computer of the three on the block, and that it had TWO floppy drives which meant I could play games that required two floppy disks without swapping between them. Actually to go a step further, I remember the days before personal computers.
I remember when most people didn't own color televisions and there really were only 13 channels of worthy television. Plus UHF if you had the add-on dohicky.
I don't remember Ford being president although I was born during his administration. I do however remember Jimmy Carter being elected.
I remember when the original Star Wars, Episode 4 first came out and just how awesome it was.
I remember being able to go all day on a five dollar bill, I remember 49-cent gasoline (at the real cheap pumps, 69 cents elsewhere), 4-cent pints of milk, loaves of bread costing about 40 cents, and the introduction of the TV dinner.
I remember when rotary telephones were just about the only telephones and when you still could rent your telephone from the phone company.
I remember before there was an easy to dial 911 phone number for emergencies, and prank calling it once it came into being.
I remember when Wizards of the Coast was a little upstart company run by three guys a gal and their garage, when the proposal card was invented and when it was played, and when they became an evil corporation and ceased to be the good guys.
I remember when the only roleplaying game you could get was D&D, and it came in basic, expanded, advanced, and expert sets each with it's own color cardboard box and 20 page manual.
I remember the airing of racist cartoons and not getting them as a little kid. Why was bugs bunny handing out ice cream filled with hand grenades to kids he was calling slant-eyes?
I remember the Cold War. I remember when the USSR broke up. I remember the fall of the wall between East and West Germany (and have a piece of it). I remember the Challenger exploding. I remember the gas crisis of the 70's.
I remember the advent of aluminum cans (previous ones had been steel). I remember the advent of twist-off bottle lids, and I remember peel tab beer cans.
I remember the tylenol poisonings, and how they brought about changes in safety regulations that made medicine bottles all but impossible to open.
I remember when the speed limit on all highways was mandated at 55mph.
I remember when nobody was stopped from boarding a plane, and security didn't have metal detectors. I remember metal detectors being added everywhere.
I remember when seat belts were required in cars, but not required by law to be worn. I owned a car that did not have to have seat belts because it was made before they were the law.
I remember when $5 was a lot of money. Then $20. Then $40, then $100. Now I pay $200+ bills and don't even think about them and $1000 doesn't go as far as it used to.
I remember when Magic Markers first came out, and when they later came out with a no-smear formula. I also remember when scotch tape came out in a new "magic invisible" version.
I remember when schools weren't so suspend and expel happy - I remember bringing knives to class for show and tell, for bringing a bandolier belt full of 30-06 ammo for a report I did, when being caught with marijuana was a 5-day suspension, and when fighting on campus was a 2 day suspension. You had to almost kill someone or destroy a lot of property to get expelled. Come to think of it, when a boy kissed a girl in kindergarten the girl went 'ick' and the boy wasn't slapped with a sexual harassment suit.
Come to think of THAT, I simply remember when people had more common sense and when they did something dumb, they damn well admitted it and got on with life, not looked for someone else to blame.

I'm reading a couple of comics from the mid-1980s now, and it's amazing how Saturday Mornings used to mean something. The networks would buy huge two-page spreads advertising their new Saturday Morning Line-ups. Those were the days.
I also remember Intellivision. I played Burgertime before many of you guys were even born.

I didn't think anybody here would even know what I was talking about! But yeah, we had to differentiate between the Ghostbusters and the "Real Ghostbusters." The Ghostbusters had a monkey. How great is that?
And we also had to tell the difference between Coca-Cola Classic and that "other" Coke.

I remember when the area around my house was surrounded by cornfields, and if you stayed up late you could sometimes see coyotes walking down the street.
I remember being able to see the stars from anywhere in town.
I remember standing on the roof with my dad and looking at things with the telescope.
I remember watching the Northern lights from the backyard.
I remember My Pet Monster, the Care Bears, TMNT, the live-action Batman show and Bugs & Tweety when it was still being called "Merry Melodies" and "Looney Tunes."
I remember spending all day playing in the sandbox in the backyard, burying metal tonka trucks and digging them back up again.
I remember feeling rich when I got two dollars a week if I managed to keep my room clean for the whole week.
I remember spending it all on 5-cent candy and eating it in the clubhouse behind my friend's house.
I remember being excited that on Thursdays we could stay up until 8:30PM to watch the Simpsons.
I remember having a big debate in the school playground about who killed Mr Burns.
I remember when I could fit all my many files on the computer onto two floppy disks.
I remember feeling superior because OUR family had a COMPUTER (and by Computer I mean Commodore 64).
I remember when we had at least one blackout every couple months, and I remember how much fun it was to get the whole family playing cards or board games by candlelight.
And I'd say "I remember going on adventures" but I still do that.
Lucky me to have friends who have kept their childhood spirit, and don't look at me funny when I call a stick a sword and want to hunt invisible warriors. <3

I still have the molds, ovens, and some of the goo. Nobody's allowed to make products even remotely like them anymore, due to moronic kids that couldn't wait for metal to cool.Black Sparrow wrote:I still have some of the bugs I made from those, too.PF27 wrote:I remember when creepy-crawlers were still legal. Y'know, those ovens where you put toxic plastic goo into a metal mold, cooked it, then pulled it out with your bare hands?
...wait, they're illegal now?
I remember it being cool to hang out the local gas station/convience store cause it where the cool kids hanged out. I so had a thing for the senior with the Iroc Z 28.
My favorite pastime was playing quarter acarde games and pool at the said gas station. Give me $5 and I'll be there all night.
When hanging out on the Lake of the Ozarks when it wasn't commericalized to hell.
When the word "kidnapped" ment that you're friends where going to grab you and take you out for the evening, or day, or weekened. And your parents were cool with it.
I remember staying up late so my brother and I can watch the music videos on MTV.
I remember blocking out my Sunday morning to listern to the *entire* top 40 countdown with Kasey.
I remember when there was only two kids instead of 4 kids in my family.
I vaguely recall being "pure"

I remember living on a small boat in canada, I remember taking a ferry to the mainland. I remember having only one little TV and getting up early so that I would have time to adjust the rabbit ears before watching the old Teenage mutant ninja turtles, power rangers, and other cheap yet awesome shows. And the simpsons.
I remember seeing one of those dolls who would eat anything you put in front of it's mouth on tv, I remember wanting one. I remember not getting one before they were discontinued after a lawsuit where one of them got a hold of some kid's hair and started eating it. And ripped it out of her scalp.

I remember always wondering why it was the "Real" Ghostbusters. I think I thought it was implying that the ones in the movie were fake, or something like that...cortland wrote:I didn't think anybody here would even know what I was talking about! I remember Duck Tales. And Beetlejuice.
And when cartoons were allowed to be violent and actually have people die and stuff.

I remember a time before VH1 countdowns when people were happy in the present and felt no need to pine about vague memories of years gone by.
