The baboon deserves an explanation.
But there is none.
That's the joke, if it can be called that. It's just a baboon, as if to say, baboons require no punchline. They are inherently funny.
Remind me to tell you about "The Sandwich," one of the most memorable comedy sketches in the Universe.
------------------

Oh, and by the way -- I just caught up on my backlog of comics. I absolutely loved Dec 27 and Dec 21.
I've got about four single-panel comics of my own, only two of which are funny anymore. I swear, I wish I had more ideas for funny stuff.
Randy,
Here's another reminder: Please tell us about "The Sandwich," the most memorable comedy sketch in the universe, which was written by the incomparable Mark Berrett, who loves you.
I think baboons are even funnier from the back.

------------------

That would have made a better punchline than the one you used. [e.g. "A Baboon. (note to reader: Baboons require no punchline. They are inherently funny.)"] But that's just my opinion.
I strongly suspect, based on the time of your post, Randy, that this is wee-morning-hour humor at its finest. You're asleep right now, I bet...
--Howard

I think, then, that I did this comic exactly right. The punchy "baboons need no punchline" bit is pretty traditional humor, and I think setting the joke farther out of reach makes it that much funnier for those who do grasp it on their own. Like Mark, from whom I stole the whole basic concept. Glad you liked it, Mark. And thanks for The Sandwich.
------------------

Ahh, the Sandwich.
In 1993, when Mark and I were both new to the Garrens, Mark wrote a piece entitled "The Sandwich," in which music played -- some zippy little orchestra piece I can't remember... Wagner or some such -- and he stood on stage, making a sandwich. When he finished making it, he sat down and took a bite. Then the lights went down. And that was it.
He didn't make the sandwich to the music or anything like that -- he just did nothing funny whatsoever. So the Garrens that were watching were in tears, knowing that no punchline was forthcoming, and that the audience didn't know that, and the audience was dead silent. I remember laughing so hard that [insert metaphor here]. It was very funny.
------------------

Actually, that does sound pretty funny, in an Andy Kauffman type way. Can I steal . . . um, borrow it? I'm going to a variety show put on by my old high school drama club this weekend, and I've been warned that they're secretly planning to drag me onstage at some point. I don't wanna go unprepared.
Although I'm feeling evil. I might just sing "Mr. Roboto" a capella.
------------------

Ahh, good times.
I would like to add a tidbit, however. The music in the background was not my idea. I was confused at the time and said okay. In my opinion the sketch was still kind of funny, but it's a completely different joke. It would be like Randy putting flashing lights around the baboon. It's just acting like something that's not a big deal is a big deal, which is not what I was going for. We did have the opportunity to do it as it was written last semester, however. It was a joyous moment. I think Randy was there.
