Seriously, the burnt dog should be entering the comix...

I foresee a strip with Burnt Dog as a sort of Bill-the-Cat like character... rarely saying anything, but being dragged around by the other characters as a mascot. The dog would be a cool conversation piece, and the odor (assume burnt hair combined with wet dog) would make evil characters leave the strip fast, which would keep things hopping - I like a lot of variety in a strip. The dog could still be alive, just severely burned with maybe a little bloody spare ribs showing, and it would emit feeble "ack" noises - or if that's too close to Bill, maybe "brack" or "ark." Hey, you probably thought of all this already. Just my 2 cents.
