I think it's Andrew's pose that does it.

Heh, you're right. Andrew is a DM unto himself. I can almost see the next comic featuring Andrew finally looking up from his narration

Andrew: "... and THAT is how you manage to vanquish Shirley, disperse the orc army, and bring peace to the land."
Mark: Really?
Nate: Wow
Doug: I knew we had it in us.
Chad: Well, that was easy. Almost effortless, one might say.
I am Matt Oliver and I have approved this message.

Rock is dead. Long live paper and scissors!

Well, it maybe wouldn't be that drastic, though I remember the following happening several times while I was GM:

Andrew: "Okay, combat's been going on for an hour now and I'm sick of it. You kill all the enemies, taking some amount of damage in the process. However, you immediately rest afterwards and heal all the damage you took. Moving on..."

I found the reference to this in the comic hilarious. It happened when the party was attacking the orc army.

Andrew: "Okay, let's move things along. Everyone roll 1d10. That's how many orcs you manage to kill before they overwhelm and capture you."

As for the expression, I'm sure Nate finds it amusing because I usually have a somber expression on my face.
