ok ive got some IRC thing called pirch, but i dont know wtf im doin. someone tell me before i explode

Ok. For the uniniated (read: people to bloody lazy to look up the key word "IRC" on google), IRC is one of the simplest things to get going.

When you first start up the program you should be able to some how get to a screen which usually contains a single massive text box (for reading) and a single text box for typing.

type "/server au.austnet.org" and you should be able to connect to the IRC server on which you can find the channel. The command should work on just about any program out there.

_after_ it has connected, type "/j #httg" and you should find yourself in a room full of geeks.
