Now, this is a subject that's near and dear to my heart. I already didn't think that school gave enough information on the subject of sex education. And in my highschool, the only class that said anything on the subject was biology which isn't even a required course. IN the 5th grade, we saw videos that were from the 60's. The girl's video was telling us the importance of caring for your kotex belt. My mom never even used a kotex belt! The teacher didn't even know what it was when the students asked him about it. And the guy's video mostly dealed with myths about masterbation. I can honestly say, I didn't learn a damn thing from sex ed in the 5th grade. 6th grade, I learned a little, but not much.

I honestly beleive that sex education should also cover, at least, a brief explanation on genetic problems that can occur with sexual organs. Warning signs on Prostate problems, Ovarian disorders and even Endometriosis (sp?). And for the female side of it, the only parts they even cover is basically: This is a vagina, it leads to the uterus, which is connected to the felopeon tubes, that the egg from the overy travels down once a month.
What about the rest of the stuff? There is a lot more to a vulva than just the vagainal canal... grrr....

Lets just kill underage kids who have sex with STDs instead of telling them how to prevent them, because no sex is the only thing we should be teaching kids.... Bull shit.

Sorry if I'm ranty, but this pisses me off. There is so much about the body that people should learn and I think it's stupid that the Government wants people to find this out on their own. Thank God I had parents that felt the need to explain things to me, but I know not everone has open minded parents or feel as comfortable talking to their parents as I do.

When I was helping run the GLBT club at UAA, we actually held seminars on sex education and people who weren't in the GLBT club or gay came to them because they wanted to learn more. I was amazed at the ammount of stuff people didn't know about their own bodies.

maybe before I concentrait on making lesbian comics for lesbians, maybe I should think about making a Sexual Education Comic Series. Get another person(s) to help research stuff and write scripts and make a series of different comic books that talk about different subjects on Sexual Education. Not meant as porn but as actualy education. Try to aim it to pre-teens and teenagers.

This reminds me of one of my favorite analogies:

The approach that the feds are taking is akin to removing seatbelts from cars because they give a false sense of security; nevermind any actual benefits they may confer. Remove the seatbelts, and people will drive safer because they know (and by know, I mean are told) an accident will probably kill them.

I'm sure it'd be just as effective, too. </sarcasm>

Seatbelts save lives; condoms save lives. Neither are 100% effective, but we don't see any big calls to eliminate seatbelts, do we? No, we get ticketed $50 if we're caught not wearing them... (At least in this state.)

I'm sure there must be some organizations out there that don't get federal funding; the government can't touch them then, lest they invite a challenge under the First Amendment. In the meantime, sit back and enjoy yet more examples of the Congress and President's "Legislating the Laws of the Universe." (And this is not unique to Dubya; they've been doing it for quite a while. Also, I'd point out that this was published the first week of July '04, so it's not a post-election development. Take that as you will.)

yeah, but it's the same president and his agenda's didn't change after he was re-elected. Now granted, if I have kids, I've already told myslef I wasn't going to send them to a public school. It sounds mean and harsh, but after my personal experence, there is no way I'm going to let my children go through it too.

But I know many other children are going to go to public schools and it saddens me that they think a policy like this would work. It's like saying, if we don't tell kids what pot is, then they won't smoke it.

The article brings up a question in my mind, how many Jewish or Muslim or Buddist or Hindu or Pagan groups get federal funding?

I'd be really surprised if any pagen or Wiccan groups get fedural funding. Though there might be a few jewish groups with funding. Government funding towards religion is really bias.

A three point harness is a good idea, a 5 point anchored to the frame would be better, but alas, that's too complex for Joe 6-pack.

I do agree with Honor about the manditory seat-belt laws though. If you don't want to wear a seat-belt, you shouldn't be forced to. Just like helmets on motorcycles. If you want your brain splattered all over the pavement, then by all means, splatter away.

I have heard that the advent of mandatory helmet laws has had quite an effect on the organ donor lists; in that they're quite longer now since many of the young, healthy, relatively undamaged organs used to come from motorcycle accidents.

Agreed... While I wouldn't personally drive out of my yard without one, the government simply has no conscionable excuse compelling a competant person over the age of majority to do something "for your own good" when failure to do so would harm no one else.

That's not "governing", that's "parenting".

Agreeing with CJ waaaaay back, I think the idea of the educational comics is an excellent idea. A comic for general knowledge, one for stds, one for pregnancy, and maybe one each specific for gay and lesbian couples. It sounds like a wonderful undertaking...

As for the imposition of laws "For Our Own Good", I blame these laws specifically for diluting our genepool with dipsticks who should have died off from stupidity.
