Somebody posts one of these on every message board in existence, so I figure I'll get the ball rolling here and hopefully bring a little humor into a grim remembrance of a dark day.
Well, one year ago today, two planes crashed into the World Trade Center Towers in New York City, New York, USA, and another crashed into the Pentagon building in Washington, DC, USA. A fourth crashed in a field near Pittsburgh, one that was on its way to the White House, if memory serves me.
The point is that thousands of people died, either crashing in an airplane, having a building fall on them, or getting hit by the airplane or the subsequent explosion stemming from a jetliner ramming into a ground structure.
Part of the terrorist propaganda was that the World Trade Center Towers stood for American financial might, which is partially true. Of course, what's really quite stupid about that is that the towers ALSO stood for the financial beings of a lot of other countries that were all represented there--and a lot of other people from those other countries. These people died, too; any English, Arabic, or German people that were there, any Israeli, Pakistani, Polish, Swedish, Mexican, Spanish, Canadian, Brazilian, or Russian people that were there died; the attack that was directed at the United States really hit a lot more people than that. Of course, I don't know exactly what countries were represented at the WTC off-hand, so this is just an example--but a lot more than just "Americans" died.
Like I said before, this is a dark day to remember, a tragedy, and things aren't really looking up now that peacekeeping forces of all sorts are spread about the world in an attempt to combat terrorism. It's officially a war of some kind, one that's pretty hard to fight. But, while everyone is dwelling on mourning loved ones who died, remembering lost heroes who also died trying to save the loved ones of other people who died that I mentioned before that last comma, and getting angry at those people responsible for this atrocity, I figure we should think of some of the lighter things.
I mean, if I died, and everybody got super-somber and weepy and completely lost their positive outlook on life, I'd figure that I'd lived a pretty pointless life. I betcha the people that died would want everybody to retain some happiness and to spread it about--to borrow a colloquialism that's been dragged in the mud behind a dogsled, trampled in snow, died, been buried, been exhumed, and dragged in more mud, "If we lose hope, the terrorists have truly won." So don't be down--be up. Or happy. Or something.
I have an idea--let's have everybody reply to this thread with something positive; something remembering people who died, or some sort of ideal, or the twin towers, or SOMETHING. No sad sacks here, though. Start your own thread. :P
I'll start it off by talking about the Twin Towers and how spiffy-keen-tall they were. Just think of the view afforded by anyone standing on top of them... anyone could look down and see a bunch of smaller buildings that make up the rest of New York City. Between those buildings, you could've also seen people that appeared to be very far away, mostly because they WERE very far away. In a downward direction, of course. I'm just imagining all this because I never visited the towers or ever actually saw anything east of Chicago in person; a lot of other people are probably in the same boat as I, but unfortunately, we can't go look at the WTC towers anymore.
So let's remember some funny factoids, memories, or ideas, or something, eh?
And EVERYBODY, have a nice day.

Heh.
I like that, Joe. That was heartfelt and cool, and it got me to thinkin'. Well, more than I usually do, which isn't a whole lot.
I was half-kidding about the buildings themselves and the view they probably afforded--I mean, they really just looked like really huge buildings in the middle of some slightly-less-huge really huge buildings, to be honest. But hey, I was groovin' along a goofy beat there, and decided to go with it.
Glad somebody put my thread to use.
I'm an American, too, and I think that building the same thing there wouldn't be too bad; it would just say "Hey, you knocked us down, we've gotten back up now, I see you've accomplished a lot with your life." At least, I think so. Theoretically, we'll need something with the same relative capacity to house the World Trade Center (which will no doubt end up SOMEPLACE), but it probably won't be there. I mean, rebuilding the WTC is probably high on someone's list, and they're gonna clean up the mess from the old towers before doing anything with the site. I don't remember how long they said it would take, but they'll probably put a memorial there when they're finished. Kinda like the Vietnam War Wall with all the names of people who died is my theory. Maybe a small mock-up of what the towers used to look like. Couldn't hurt.
Well, we drifted away from the somewhat lighthearted idea I had, but that's cool. It happens.
Oh, and good quote there, Joe.
Have a nice day.

Everyone is acting so deep and wise now...I don't have any cool quotes or silly jokes, but I am and American too and I think we should build something beautiful there. The Empire State Building is so beautiful when you actually look at its architecture, the WTC was just big and square. We should make a new land mark that people will see and just be in aw of...A new national landmark, like the eiffel tower or big ben or the statue of liberty. Like joe said, something artistic, that will not only ruin the terrorists plan, but turn it completly around on them...But it should be big...big is fun...and useful...and...big...ok, i ran out of stuff to say...so Have A Nice Day...and don't get too depressed!

something small
John Stewart said something very wise, and heartfelt the day he came back to te show after the attacks last year. He said that without the Towers the Statu of Liberty can be seen in Manhatten, and that they couldn't have a more glorious view in all the world, or of anythin better. I think he was completly right about this. The towers were lovily, bu what i better than Miss Liberty herself reminding usthe vaulues that his nation was founded on.
I was very proud of this country lastyear, and this year (more so than usual) because after just little over a week we bounced back toork. We knew our responsibilities, and as painfull as it was stuckto them. 2 days after the attack i was back in school, and i worked the day afterwards. Any country strong enough to do that can never be beaten, or stopped so easily.
On a side note what are peoples thoughts on Iraqa, shoul we attack, or not? I personally say that we shouldn't without backing from the UN. I just never understood why we didn't kill Sadam back inthe day desert shield)
