PS bloom effect?
Anybody know a clever way to create a bloom effect in photoshop? In the past, I've duplicated the layer to be 'bloomed,' gaussian blurred it, reduced transparency, then shifted the blurry layer to 'screen' but the effect isn't always apparent enough...

Try 'Linear Dodge' instead of 'Screen', and don't reduce the transparency.
Also...multiple layers can be your friend.

Notice the soft light... it's kinda like an american soap opera, or the view with barbara walters, where they apply vaseline to the camera lens so she doesn't look 180 years old.

With bloom:

without bloom:

I have to say the linear dodge gives much better results than screen. Thanks again Bionic!

I actually just found that one out recently myself; was looking at tutorials for making star fields and they had a technique for basically making bloom-halos around stars using Linear Dodge and Blur. When I saw your post, I was pretty sure the same thing could be used for what you were trying. So yer kinna lucky, timing-wise, on this question.
