Does my artstyle work for my subject matter?

Post by Rhenny »

Here's the thing, theres only a few pages up, but I have a nagging feeling i should have gone to color. I heavily work the grayscale, almost to a noir movie like painting and wanted to know if the line and "color style" works? I could do color, but worry about the workload (as if doing that level of gray isnt about the same) on a weekly basis. could someone take a look and let me know what you think fo the style?

The current comic (posted on March 2) looks great in the greyscale look/feel. The one before it looks fine too, but I guess I'd really have to see more of where you're going with the comic to judge. With what I have to look at though, I think that it could go color and be fine, or stay greyscale as long as you keep shadowing and stuff like you are now.

Plain and simple: if you keep the same level of work/quality as what you've done so far, I think greyscale is fine.

Either subtle toned down colours or greyscale would do fine for your comic. Although I like colour, I think your style is not suited to really bright colours.

I definitely agree with harishankar on the bright colors... but as of now, I've enjoyed what you have done with the different greys and shading/shadows.

Thanks guys,
I thought I would ask, you hear back and forth in some circles a b/w or gray comic will never do well. So before i do to much I wanted the input. By muted colors do you mean washed colored with a higher transparency, or in color selection?

By muted colours, I meant

1. Half-tones, and use of low intensity colours. That is pick a certain colour and liberally tone it down with a mix of grey.
2. Limited palette works beautifully on some drawing styles and adds a touch of class to a comic.
3. Shadows, accents and highlights to add dramatic effect.

I dunno if my art style works for my comics. However SL could be better if the art was better. I'm so tempted to come back and redraw some panels I'm ashamed of.
And I think Ted Pax should be in colour since it's about a blue haired kid.

I see you've gone with color on your latest page and I think it's a definite improvement.
I like the subtle color palatte you've chosen, your banner looks good too.
Overall I think your art looks pretty cool.
Watch your perspective, tho, the building on the top left has a prob with the angle on the right side.
Doesn't match the rest of the skyline.

Thanks for the feedback!

The color thing is a process, it's slowing me down considerably but I think the output is well worth it. As ot the perspective issues, absolutely it was one of those things where I caught it a tad too late and I promised myself by the colors stage if it's in, its in. better to post as is, because there will be elements I always dislike rather than try to noodle it out. Learn and try to fix the next time I do that shot.

Thanks for feedback on the Palette, I wasn't sure if it was too loud after doing her hair, wow thats theres an eye killer after a few hours. Ultimately, I do think if you have a character with a color intrinsic look (odd hair, odd suit or whatever) you have to do color otherwise no onewould get just how odd her look can be. Thank you very much for the feedback, now I just need to get faster to do more pages per week in color.
