Curly hair

Post by Killbert-Robby »

No matter how hard I try, I never seem to be able to draw good looking curly hair. I was wondering if any of you could? Just so I can get some ideas of how its done and incorporate it into my style, don't worry, I won't lift it straight from your help.

Are we talking about hair for men or women?
I'm not sure if this would work with your style, but here is how I do it:

Just soft curls, I think anything past that point makes them look like poodles. Shaded, not outlined. Other than that, there's no real trick...

I usually just go crazy with circles. It makes it easy to realize the hair is curly, but it does make it look a bit more wild too. If you prefer it to look more controlled or tamed you might rather go a different way, but I always thought my style was decent enough.

Well this is my only character with curlly-ish hair (last panel). I was going more for long and curly, so I kept the top a pretty straight and just did "wiggly" lines for the curly bit. I think the top would be less curly than the bottom in longish hair due to the hair's weight. I recall using stock photos for this one...

Well, it actually depends on what kind of curly hair you really want... There's the wavy kind, or the very wavy kind, or the loopy curly kind, or the curly que kind. Or, there's the rich girl's iron curler hair, or the frizzy hair, or the almost frizzy hair that isn't supposed to be frizzy, but the character was born with unwanted frizzy hair.

I'm a very specific person. But if you really want help, you can always find a picture of a real person with curly hair, and try to work from that. Real things are absolutely helpful.

Ta-da! Here is my contribution to the Curly Hair issue. (It may take a sec to load, as it is hosted on imageshack.)
