...Opinion of a new comic?

Post by Cinematic »

Okay. So I've been making my new comic Cinematic for a while. The feedback I've been getting from friends has generally been pretty good, once it finally launched. I currently have a buffer up to the beginning of February (of course, I've had that buffer since before Jan 1, when it launched, which tells you how good I am at keeping to a schedule.)

So basically I'm looking for comments and critiques. Opinions are welcome too. Slander not so much.

So... yeah. Thanks in advance for any criticism / commentary you guys happen to come up with. I think the archive has about 8 comics in it at the moment. Lemme know iffen you want to see more.

I'm going to try to be nice as possible, while still behing honest.

Mainly, your comic isn't going to appeal to a wide range of people, except movie buffs like yourself. No offence, but I didn't get half of the jokes because I didn't know much about the movies/people that were referenced. Of course, the comic IS about movie buffs, so that's not a bad thing, it's just got a very limited range of potential readers.

Your art style seems alright, but you should try not to copy and paste constantly. You obviously can draw different poses and situations, but for some reason you only draw ONE per comic, and recycle a lot of images you've done already. Everyone can get away with copy and paste once in a while, even I do it occasionally, but after every comic ends up being the exact same image with new text, it loses half it's entertainment value.

For what it is, the comic seems pretty good. I mean the jokes are funny for people that understand them, and like I said, the art style is one that is definately workable, you just need to put a bit more effort into each individual comic.

To sum it up, you'll probably have a few readers that love movies as much as you do, but the copy & paste is really something you should avoid if you want your comic to be more than just something you're closest friends are going to be willing to read. I'm not trying to be harsh or anything, I'm just telling you what most others on this forum have told other people in the past.

I thought the comic was pretty pleasant. Not terribly funny, but not bad.

I don't like the second title page I'm not much for title pages in general, I like to see a comic when I click "first". But I can stand one because I know some people like them. I especially didn't mind your first one because I knew the site was movie based, so it seemed appropriate. The second one was just annoying. That's like hearing a commedian repeat a joke he just told. I think you should take it out of the archives, it slows things down.

Some of the jokes were a bit flat. The "Priceless" joke is a big cliche right now. I've already seen really good parodies of those credit card commercials, so this one was not that funny. I've also made the mistake of beating the dead horse. :)

Also, the "In Demme we trust" joke, well, it wasn't a joke. Something at least slightly unexpected has to happen for it to be a joke. You'd already established that the guy on the right likes Demme, so hearing him say something good about Demme wasn't really a punch line.

That reminds me of another thing, I don't remember your characters names. I remember Angela, because you used her name in a couple of comics. I can't remember the other names ever being used. Maybe you did use their names, but it wasn't enough for me to remember. Characters in movies, games, comics, or any type of media should call each other by name much more often than in real life.

They are visually distinctive, though. I like that you don't use more characters than you can keep visually distinct. I don't have any trouble remembering which is which in my head.

...are things like rants and film reviews things people are actually going to read, or am I just going to waste my tyme and effort in making them?

By the bye, the reason for the two posters is that, well, when a movie comes out there are at least 8 months worth of ads if it's from a major company like Paramount. Thought I would do the same. In hindsight, maybe it doesnt work so well.

...oh, and by the way, about names? Yeah, I use at least one per comic for the first few comics in the archive. Namelessness was not something I wanted... guess I kinda failed

Yeah, the 2 posters step over the line of parodying a bad thing into *being* a bad thing. :) There's just nothing to tell people that this is a joke.

Some people will read the rants, some won't. I have a very small number of regular readers for my comic so far (6 to 10, according to my tracking stuff). However I've already had someone chastise me for not posting enough rants.

Yeah, it's pretty easy to build up a big buffer when you could easily copy and paste each frame to make your comic.
Tomorrow, I shall make a more indepth critique after the hangover goes away.

The art is ok, clean and cut. The humor, well, it only appeals to a small audience. I think that you might want to aviod the cpoy and paste syndrome. Monotony might turn readers off
