Hey all.
I may start a neato project in the near future which will require me to create some hand drawn sprites to make a game with, and hey I just wanna throw this out there for the heck of it: it won't be an RPG.
Anyway, I've dabbled with sprite creation, but that doesn't mean I know what I am doing. If anyone could provide any tips and tricks of this trade at all I would be very appreciative.
Should I be able to pull this off expect to hear about it on CG first.
Anyone know how to make sprites out there?

Cool, I'd like to hear more about this project. I'm not sure what kind of style you're after, but I have some experience with making sprites. They are not really high-res, or adapted from a hand-drawing, but they are based on my comic characters. It really depends on which engine/language you're going to use to build your game.

The forum community at Bob and George has a large and active spriting section. Some of it is Mega Man sprite oriented, but not all of it. It's got some good general spriting resources as well as knowledgeable people who can probably give you the kind of help and feedback you're looking for in drafting original sprites. The sticky "Sprites for Dummies: Help and Advice" is a good thread to start in for general advice.

Our very own Joel Fagin has a listof countless tutorials (well, I could count them, but I am very lazy). That's a great place to start for anything comic-related that you need. Many of them he writes himself, but the one for Sprites happens to be written by another CG face: Medalia. (That one includes a section with many helpful links you can use)
It's a little trickier to find specific instructions on making them from scratch, but then, that's something you have to learn by copying and emulating the way pros do it. There are a number of sites where you can rip Sprite skins directly. Like this one. Or this one. Just google 'sprites, skins' and see what you find.

I like this tutorial too.

A few weeks ago I ran into a pixel art tutorial from Drawfurry.com. Perhaps this is what you're looking for?
