Problem with the shoddyness of the archive

Post by Namorvia »

Hey, i've been doing a comic for a year now, updating every week mainly just for my mates at college. The original joke behind it being that i can't draw.

Still i got into it more and more and personally i think its getting good, its definately getting better. I'm constantly learning new tricks and being more technical with my drawing. For example i now pen my drawings after i'm done with the pencil, something i wouldn't do originally because i'd have messed up and wrecked the drawing. The story and the organization of the comic too is much improved.

The problem is that i don't want to scare off any new readers who get put off reading the archives by how bad they are, yet at the same time i don't know if its a good idea to go back and redo the old comics or whether i'd come to dissaprove of the new ones just as much with time.

If anyone has any advice from personal experience etc. it'd be much appreciated. Comic is http://heroesofmittenmagic.comicgenesis.com if your what to know what i'm on about. One might say my drawing is slightly stylized.

Or on the other hand, your readers could marvel at just how much your art style has evolved. I, personally, find it interesting to look back at how a comic's art has changed over time. It also makes me curious as to what direction it will go in the future.

My art level hasn't changed too drastically since the beginning of my comic, but the only drawings I'd consider editing are the comics within ten of the most recent one, or any that are just strikingly and distractingly incorrect in some way.

It's almost certain, if you keep working and improving, that you'll look back on today's comics and feel the same as you do now towards your very first comics. In other words, if you wish to redo every past comic just because you feel you've improved, you're going to end up drawing your entire archives over and over multiple times.

Truth. Just make new comics. Perhaps some day it'll be worth starting over, but not yet.

I love seeing the evolution of my favorite comics. Look at any of the longest running comics on the web and you'll see a big difference from start to end. I've been up for four years (three on Keenspace/ComicGen) and my styles changed a TON, but I still love the early strips, crap art and all.
