Critique

Post by Matthewabel »

Howdy. My url is http://matthewabel.comicgenesis.com and I'm looking for some folks willing to give me a good critique. What I should work on, what type of practice I should practice. My style changes slightly throughout, but I prefer a spare style.

But, you know, I hope you'll say whatever you want.

The comic is well drawn and though there is a lot of obvious inside jokes some of it worked quite well. That said i think there are some easy things to do to improve.

I would move the comic down and put your title image at the top of the page, as well as your menu buttons (archive, cast, etc.). Also as a personal preference I find black a very blah background color, maybe stick with the charcoal template.

Otherwise its pretty good, but with these small adjusments it could be a lot better.

The "Geek culture" genre is really popular, but also really saturated. So your comic may compete better if you add some color. I see that you added color on a couple, and those look MUCH better. Color would really make your style "pop." Often, it's quality, not quantity, that counts.

I like your character designs. Not too common, not too stylized. You may have some work to do on hands, but everyone has those problems. It's good to see that you don't wuss out like some artists by hiding the hands ever chance you get.

Finally, I'm going to disagree with Sam. I think that black is a good color for background. It's not distracting, and makes the comic stand out more so that it really becomes the centerpiece.

Check some of your links. The ones on your Dailytemplte in particular seem to be broken.

It was purely a personal preference, I think that black as a background works nicely with colored comics, but otherwise with a black and white comic (in my opinion, which is in no way expert) color backgrounds can really liven up the page.

Yet this is once again a personal preference, so maybe take a poll?

p.s. i think the black background works nicely for you black sparrow

Have to agree with Sam on this, I just think it's better if you're reader can see your title logo right away.
Also, your art has improved a lot since you started... I'm loving the new style.

Thanks for taking the time to read through and critique. My co-creator and I will be working to update the webpage a bit so it will be more colorful. At this time, I just don't have time to color the comics - I prefer a black and white anyway. I think as time goes on, I'll be able to better use my comic space, though.

Whoever said "work on hands" - whew. Hands are the hardest thing to draw. Except for feet, maybe. But I decided fairly early on that if I was going to draw a comic, I'd have some hands a'showing, and by golly, they'd have four fingers, too!

Anyway, I'll definitely do some more to the page - maybe a color border around the comic? I don't want to do too much - I myself have dial up and feel the pain when just loading my page now.
