IMDb Movie of the Day
He's long-eared and furry and visits children by night, but Frank is about as far from an Easter confection as a bunny can get. He exists--on and off--in the mind of suburban high schooler Donnie Darko (Jake Gyllenhaal), a bright kid who teeters perpetually on the brink of schizophrenia. When Frank helps Donnie cheat death one night by luring him out of bed moments before a stray jet engine crashes into his room, Donnie begins to heed the rabbit's ominous message: the world is coming to an end in a matter of days, and there is much to be done in the meantime. In Donnie Darko, a kind of Gen-X retelling of Harvey, first-time director Richard Kelly blends social satire with a haunting portrayal of a struggle against personal demons. While it's packed with influences--ranging from John Hughes to Philip K. Dick--the story nevertheless comes off as unique, and its ending is the kind of puzzler that could fuel hours of debate. Both the film and Gyllenhaal (forgive him his Bubble Boy) were honored with Independent Spirit Award nominations; unfortunately for the masses, however, Donnie's theatrical release proved as spectral and elusive as his nocturnal muse.
