But SOMEONE probably would've pointed it out sooner or later, anyway.
In Monday's comic (which is funny as always even with this anomoly), either Butch's opponent doesn't know how to play Battleship, he's cheating, or he's the one with the odd strategy. You put your opponent's guesses on the lower part of the board, where your ships are. Your guesses go on the upper grid.
Pooga the Pedantic
------------------

Am I one of the few here who actually hasn't played Battle Ship? The games I played in my youth were limited to the likes of Boggle, Guess Who, Hungry Hungry Hippos, and an Uncle Wiggly board game.
[This message has been edited by Lord Emsworth (edited 05-31-2001).]

Get yer minds out of the gutter, people! Yeesh! The Uncle Wiggly Game is an overly cutesy kids' game about a rabbit named Uncle Wiggly. It's somewhere on the level of CandyLand or Chutes and Ladders in terms of excitement and complexity.

I went through a lot of board games in my youth. That's not to say I played all of them. Quite a few were reduced to a non-playable state before I ever learned the rules. I kept getting all these oddball games for presents. Stuff like the Star Wars Escape From Death Star Game, Mad's Spy vs. Spy game, Upwords (A kind of 3-dimensional Scrabble), Careers (Something in the Pay-Day/Life genre of board games), and several others that weren't even memorable enough for me to, um, remember.
Then there were the "classics". I figure anything they're still selling after 15 to 25 years has to be considered a classic. Stuff like CandyLand, Chutes & Ladders, Monopoly, Life, Othello, Yahtzee, Scrabble, Mousetrap, Spill the Beans, Cootie, Hi Ho Cherry-O (do they still make this one?), Sorry, Trouble (with the pop-o-matic dice!), Parcheesi, Operation, and, of course, Battleship. Of those, I think only Monopoly, Life and Yahtzee still have enough pieces to be playable. Yahtzee wouldn't even be in that list if it hadn't inherited the dice from other games.
Hungry Hungry Hippos (which I had to play at a friend's house, although I did have a Mr. Mouth), was recently featured in another comic, Triangle and Robert. Of course, in their reality HHH is slightly different (read these three strips and you'll see what I mean)...
Pooga, who is suddnly nostalgic for a game of Perfection
------------------

Aw gods I remember "careers". It was one of the games my parents had saved from some estate sale or something, because it was the 60's version and I grew up in the 80s. It sucked.
My sister and I also had "Mystery Mansion" which had little rooms you assembled as you searched the mansion for something. Like Clue, but the rooms changed. "Life" and "Monotony" and "Pay Day"... go wander through Toys R Us and you'll find all the new and improved versions, now in technicolor. This is worse than that whole smurfs thing.
------------------

I still play Hungry Hungry Hippos. I take it to formal dinner parties. I carry Scrabble around in my handbag incase conversation levels are low. I carry Twister around in my handbag incase physical interaction levels on a date are low. I want to be Miss Scarlet from Cluedo, and that is actually the real aim of my University degree. I had a crush on Professor Plum. I ran a "We Resent Being Forced To Be The Iron In Monopoly" campaign with a feminist group on campus.
I am a board game addict,

Colonel Mustard in the Conservatory with a lead pipe!
When I was a kid, we'd play a board game with my father every Sunday. Mom hated all board games, except for Clue, so she only played when it was Clue. Except the occasional game of Parcheesi.
But usually it was Monopoly or Risk. Dad always won at Risk, because he has a natural talent for conquering the world. He also won at Monopoly until I got a little older and started winning occasionally. (Of course, now I actually own real estate, so I guess that part was pretty good life preparation.)
My daughter is nearly old enough to appreciate board games -- correction. She's old enough to appreciate them, but not yet old enough to play them correctly, mostly. But I'm looking forward to getting back to the board game habit. Just as soon as my son stops trying to eat the pieces.
------------------

I have 4 different versions of Risk. So, i'm exceedingly well versed in taking over the world. And I don't play this wussy version with 2 dice to the defender and 3 dice to the attacker, I throw one die for every army I have. I play hardcore Risk. I've thrown upwards of 30 die before. My battles take me a little over 3 seconds to finish. Who will take me on?! *Insert evil laugh here* *Gasp, huh, huh* *Continue evil laugh*
-="Screw Greenland. I don't need Greenland, you can take it." "I Just took half of North America just now." "Shit."=-
-=ConcreteLobotomy=-
