or, "Look ma, I started a thread."
i am a lazy bastard. I have FF3(us), 7, 8 & 9 and have never finished a single one of them. i usually get to the last stage and then putz off, either due to lack of 'free' time or a sudden, exponential increase in the level of the baddies compared ot the level of me.
or there's just too many damn subplots and minigames to figure out what to do next.
as to why RPG plots alway suck ... because nobody ever gets nekkid (althou the evil bish in ff9 comes close with that little costume of his) and seriously, because RPG's are no longer new. there is a 'way' that they are written, and while situations may be different, there are always a lot of cliche's. just read one of those RPG cliche pages and see how many apply to a majority of games you've played.
I like Legend of Dragoon because yoru skill affected how many hits you got, and the FMV was gorgeous and there were enough plot twists to keep you guessing. yes, it did get annoying at times, but I thought it was one of the better games i've played recently, and i admit i don't play everything out there, my budget can't afford it.
so, now that i've ranted on about that, i'm going to go suck down some more OJ.

Heh. Yeah, Kuja's little posing pouch there didn't leave much to the imagination, huh?
Hell, I've never played RPGs for their plots. I play 'em for the hot CGI manflesh. >=) At the top of my current fav list is Kuja from FF9. I'm tellin' ya, Kamster...Iolaus as Kuja. Granted, Kuja is silver-haired and Iolaus is purple...hey, maybe Seraseth all grown up? ^_^
Nevermind...I'm still holding out for Bondage Aerael.
That villain from Legend of Dragoon is pretty damn hot, too. I'm still playing that one. I go back and play FF7 every once in awhile just for the final scenes of Sephiroth. I don't really play FF8 unless I wanna see the shots of CGI Irvine.
Umm...I'm sorry? People actually play those games for the plot? Heh, see--I'm a graphics whore. Give me pretty graphics over battle systems and plots anytime. Or rather...give me pretty CGI bishies over all the aforementioned anytime. >=)

Metal Gear probably had one of the better plots...and I'm talking on a relative basis here, so don't get all, "What's that girl talkin' about!" But no bishies. =(
And there's Oddworld, which was pretty cool, except somewhere along the way, I always die and lose all the little guys I saved. Too fucking frustrating, IMHO.
I love eyecandy as much as anyone, but dammit, is giving us a little credit for brains and a plot that actually makes sense within the parameters of an RPG-style game so damn hard? I would't think so. I mean, I'm thinking they had to work pretty hard to come up with some of the completely outlandish shit that they do. Or maybe not. *shrug* But then, most animator/artist/coder types? Never let them get involved with the story and world-building process. They can't tell a reasonable fucking story to save their lives. I'm serious. No concept of continuality at all. People that can tell good stories become novelists.
Admitedly I'm on a plot kick right now. I just saw Ice Age--and frankly, I don't understand what all the fuss was about. It was cute, yes--I'm really happy that the animators didn't feel the need to make everything ultra realistic just 'cause they were using a 'puter. They found a style of char design that was really damn cool. Woolly mammoths and sabretooth tigers? Inherently cool...and the range of expression and detail on these guys were awesome.
But dammit, it made no sense! The reason why the whole crew was thrown together was idiotic, the scenes were all disjointed, there were points where I was genuinely scratching my head and going "WTF???" before I understood what they were trying to get across, and some of the transitions were downright jarring.
Not that it was so terrible. It was okay. It would have made a fantastic series of skits--being that's what it was mostly. And don't get me wrong, there were parts where I was rolling on the floor laughing--or thinking "damn, I wish I could do that" but as a movie? My opinion? Wait for video.
Was that off-topic enough for you, or what?

Ooo I do like Kuja! I will admit though I swear he was a girl when I first saw him, Only because he has girlier hips then I do. x_X Though, that isn't sayin much with me. But yes, now I consider him one of the prettiest characters in Graphics land to oggle at.
And As for the Movie Ice Age, I'm still trying figure out that tribe was working out with only one female in the group. Worst of all, She died!

*sigh* that was thier tongue in cheek way of explaining how the Dodo went extinct. The one they lost me at was the high-speed glacier crossing. I was totally baffled for a second there. And As for the Movie Ice Age, I'm still trying figure out that tribe was working out with only one female in the group. Worst of all, She died!
