Well, this strip was just fun. It seems like people can't figure out what's rude and what isn't when there's a new element involved.

C'mon, I know all you guys have seen it. Guy/girl on cellular phone at the restaurant/mall/park with his/her significant other trying to occupy her/himself without looking TOO bored. It's rude. If you're away from home, turn the stupid thing OFF unless you're expecting an extremely important call.
Important like "Sis had TRIPLETS?", not important like "Yeah, I thought I'd call to let you know I'm gonna call later, okay? Bye."
Important like "Sis had TRIPLETS?", not important like "Yeah, I thought I'd call to let you know I'm gonna call later, okay? Bye."
Of course, when I'm away from home is when I need the phone on, so that my S.O. can contact me.
I work on the rule that it's on until I get a call and I'm busy, at which time I silence it (without answering it ) and put it in silent mode. That way, if it's really urgent, the person in question can call a couple of times to get my attention. Otherwise, I ignore it until the conversation/meeting/whatever is finished.
All that being said, I believe that the instance shown in the comic is 100% accurate and Jackie is in the right for being annoyed. Cell phones are just roaming call-waiting, and the people interrupted are generally too polite to voice their (appropriate) anger.

important like if you're going to work as a janitor in a bar and you see the place (bar you work in) is being burglarized like i did a month agoBJ wrote:C'mon, I know all you guys have seen it. Quite. But it's probably pointless to draw any conclusions from that. Although on the other hand, what else are we in this forum for?Yun648 wrote:You know, now that you guys mention it, am I the only one who thinks that Jackie and Shannon seem quite couple-ish in today's strip?

Both. Duh. Remember the whole Melissa/Brandy thing? Knew ya did 8)
I haven't had the occasion, thankfully, to be irritated too greatly by cell phones. I don't have one, and hey, it's alright if people in public use em'...'course the few friends I do still have don't use cell phones either, so..

Actually, I've read the strip a few times, and I'm starting to think that Jackie overreacted. He got off the phone as quickly as humanly possible. I mean, sure, cel phones are supremely annoying. But they do make certain things easier and/or possible.
Oh well.
Well, it WAS rude of him not to ask "can I get this real quick?"
But, such is nitpicking.
I liked the strip where Jackie tried to come out to Ada and invited her out for ice cream instead. That was cool.

Jackie nearly came out....?
Okay, either I'm really dense or that strip didn't do a terribly good job of making its point. I think it's the 'dense' one, really- I never take the time to really read comics, I just skim them over and glance at the dialogue.

I've been enlisted to plug a webcomic called Strawberry Tokyo Girls (though it has nothing to do with strawberries and isn't set in Tokyo) because I color it, and the artist/writer doesn't have a net connection. So. Visit http://strawberry.keenspace.com so I can tell the artist I'm doing my job.

Okay, here's the strip.
Notice how Jackie is really, REALLY trying to say something until the point where she asks Ada if she wants to go out for ice cream.
It CAN'T be that hard to ask Ada out for ice cream, since Ada has no reason to suspect Jackie's interested in her that way.

I really wish/hope that was the reason.
but it's also the one year aniversery of 9/11 strip.
{edit} I mean, you can read it either way, it just to me looks like Ada's also sitting there really bummed out. {/edit}
{edit2} The only reason I read it that way is because I think that when BJ does deal with Jackies' Coming Out it there'll be a few soliloquies and monologues (read angst, during the buildup) as well as a return of PsychoCatalyst. {edit}

allan_ecker: Unfortunately, I think hampster is right. I think Jackie and Ada were both remembering and continuing their grieving processes with regard to 9/11. And you can only be in that place for so long before you need something to take your mind off it, ideally something positive, like ice cream.
And I'm not sure Jackie is anywhere near ready to come out, as I think she's still trying to decide what she thinks. I believe there will be a lot more on camera exploration of the topic before Jackie settles on what is right for her.

Damn, you guys is right.
Oh well. I'm having so much fun with the Class Menasurie and Suburban Jungle that I haven't missed speculating on Jackie's sexuality.
But I would really, REALLY like to see some more JF. Pleeeeeze?

I really don't mean to offend anyone with this, but why does every comicstrip have to be a gay comicstrip? Several of you are talking about "when Jackie comes out", when it's not been determined for sure if she is going to come out, or even if there is anything to come out about. She was only recently confronted with the idea of homosexuality, and while she has obviously been thinking about it, it also makes her uneasy as well.
I thought that Vince handled his plotline in Class Menagerie beautifully, and I always get a laugh from Suburban Jungle, but I really don't think that Jackie needs to be a gay character for this strip to be entertaining. In fact, I would prefer to see her hook up with Victor.
All of this is my almost, but not quite, humble opinion.
And again, no offense is intended toward anyone.

In relation to the topic of this particular thread... I personally don't wish to ever get a Cell Phone. When I'm away from home, I don't want to talk on the phone. (don't like talking on the phone as it is) I had a job several years ago where I had to wear a pager 24/7, and have really been turned off from those kinds of electronic leashes.
If someone really wants to talk to me, they can leave a message on my answering machine.
Surprisingly, as many people as there are who seem to have phones permanently welded to their heads, not very many seem to like leaving a message to have me call them back.

WEeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeell...
Us queers like seein' other queers, I guess. 'sonly natural.
Mikey being gay doesn't make The Class Menasurie a "gay" comic, and niether does Jackie being bisexual (my suspicion, I actually don't know). Even if Conrad did turn out to be of, uh, different gender identity, that'd still only raise the number of queers in SJ to around .3 of the main cast. Above average, but not really enough to make it a "gay" comic, since all the truely main characters are still straight. Hell, MY comic isn't a "gay" comic, even though there currently isn't a single straight relationship going on. It's a slice-of-life/adventure/sci-fi comic more than it is a "gay" comic.
Sorry. Didn't mean to rant there.
I will admitt that it seems like an awful lot of people want more gay out of their comics. I'd like to go down on the record as actually thinking Mikey was straight, right up until the end.
As you were.
