What's the big deal about Ada hating anime? I hate it, too. (Except "Samurai Pizza Cats"...)
Anyway, on the strip: Ouch. Getting bumped is one thing. But getting bumped for an anime convention...that's just adding insult to injury.

Feh... not only does Ada hate anime, but all us anime fans get to be insulted by the hotel manager's comment. Yaaaay. Thumbs-down on this strip, BJ.
And, Appendix? BIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIDA! ;p
------------------

You meet people all the time who believe, deep down in their hearts, that "madscientist" is one word, that most scientists are weird warlocks willing to risk all our lives by playing with forces they don't really understand. You want, if you have half a brain, to smack such people. And then you remember Oppie and Teller and the boys sitting around back at Trinity before Zero Hour, taking bets on whether or not they where about to ignite the atmosphere-- or Taylor, using a hydrogen bomb to light his cigarette-- and you change the subject. ~Callahan's Key

Er, I think hating anime wouldn't really be justified unless one had seen every anime. Buth then again, it's like saying "I hate movies" or "I hate magazines", which is both possible ... Anyway, I don't think Ada really hates anime.
------------------

I'll chalk it up to an outburst of anger about her dropped reservation, but I somehow feel less sorry for her...
[This message has been edited by Eliot_Cayne (edited 11-14-2001).]

You know, WHY do people think it's so frelling important to "laugh at yourself"? If someone had said "Lord of the Rings is a piece of crap, it should be abolished from printing presses forever" and some people jumped up to defend it, then you wouldn't hear anyone talking about it having a "violent cult status", they'd be "defending a great classic".
"American xenophilia"? What the hell? Americans are xenophobic if anything, despite the "melting pot" terminology.
Anyway, just... stop it. It's not fair that whenever someone makes a joke about a fandom or group or race and someone from that fandom or group or race protests, that they can just be told to "learn to laugh at yourself". Unless I'm telling a joke, I don't think I'm all that funny.
------------------

I'd say at least half of the joke in that last panel comes from the style of the strip itself, but that's just my opinion.
Also, cons are scary places filled with scary people. I've been to plenty of them, and I'm scary enough, myself. But the 20-stone woman packed into a Sailor Mars outfit? She outclasses me at every turn.
And DocMan? Joey would like her thumb back; she's going hunting this weekend and may need it.
------------------

Will somebody please explain why anime has such a violent cult status here in the States? The typical American xenophilia doesn't justify it...
After all, fans of, say, Hong Kong movies, or Indian music, don't demand that no ill be said of the medium, and don't deride every point that their own culture touches it.
Nor can you claim that its development past normal American levels justifies it - look at American print science fiction. Most Niven fans, say, don't think that somebody who thinks Larry Niven can't write to save his soul is somehow intrinsically evil.
--Michael
------------------

You've been raspberried, anime style!
And Lord of the Rings IS a piece of crap. I tried reading it, and found it about as engaging as a piece of dental floss. It has to be one of the most self-important, overblown pieces of literature out there.
And you know what? That's my OPINION. One of my best friends holds it in the highest regard, and I value his opinion. It doesn't make me like the book, but I have to take it on faith that there's some value in it, even though I don't see it.
What ruined Star Wars Episode One, apart from a missing plot? It took itself waaay too seriously. You just can't. Not even anime takes itself seriously (Otaku No Video, anyone?).
And comparing fandom to an ethnic group isn't too accurate. Maybe you should compare fandom to people who prefer Ford or Chevrolet, SUVs or sports cars, the Packers or the Vikings, Seinfeld or the Drew Carey Show, Jay Leno or Dave Letterman, heavy metal (Joey) or industrial (me)...the list goes on. These are all personal preferences, and all of us have different ones.
Me? I like anime, and I like Disney. Go figure. I'm still gonna take jabs at both of 'em. This isn't the first time, you know.
------------------

But, wouldn't laughing at yourself sometimes be a lot easier on the ol' psyche than wallowing in self-pity and taking yourself seriously all the time? Sure, life isn't one big laugh riot, but you can't walk around with a stick up your butt your whole life, either. The phrase "lighten up" is probably another you don't like.
And, why attack DocMan's particular sense of humor? I'm sure he doesn't point and laugh whenever somebody hurts themselves...We all have different brands of humor we like, and yours (Rann) doesn't happen to be the same as his. So what?
All brands of humor, save for non-sequitur jokes, somehow involve something bad happening to someone/thing else. Not catastrophic, mind you, but bad. That's just kind of how jokes work. Where I was going with that last part, I don't know, but you all can flame me if you want; I won't be responding.
