It may have been a "Financial crime", If you're caught cheating on your taxes, it's counted as a felony, even if you don't do any time for it.
The way I see it may be something like this:
Ada was married to jerk X.
They had a kid.
They then, had a divorce.
Jerk X ratted her out for some kind of impropriety as a tactic in the divorce.
Ada kicked Jerk's ass, and was then charged (and convicted) of simple assault.
Jerk gets custody of kids, and, is enabled to suspend visitation. (the prior Charge, and the Assault conviction are enough, even if her sentence was suspended, or short.)
Hence, she has to go through hell to get visitation rights.
I've watched a lot of my friends go through similar circumstances (while they are male, it can and does happen to females as well...), Difference being that in the Peoples Republic of Washington State, she'd never get a fair hearing, even if she wasn't convicted.

... I suppose we know why she's a convicted felon now...
I for one couldn't have imagined that reason.

Well, I don't ebeleive she's the convicted felon in this case. Her exact wording is "Yeu canne' geve custody of a six-month-old te a convected felon." This means that the felon has the child, and since that person isn't Ada, most likely the felon she's speaking of is the father. At least, I'm assuming it's the father, anyway, from that it doesn't seem that she is the convicted felon. Otherwise, she'd have the child.
ANyway, if she was on drugs at the time, even during the pregnancy, although that can't be currently substantiated, she would probably lose custody, probably seen as unfit to take care of the child. The "father" (I'm guessing, heh), even though he's a convicted felon, might be considered the better alternative in such a case. And, also due to her track record, she probably would be denied visits. So, she's only now, after having enough time to prove herself and getting the "fathers" consent (that's how it works, right?), she's been granted the chance to see him. After all, the letter was from the Department of Social Services, she must now be allowed to see her son.
From that, it seems that it wasn't her that was the felon, it was the "father". That couldn't have been an easy conclusion to arrive to at the time, though, as to where to send the child. I guess she seemed the greater of two evils. Sure, she isn't now, it might even have been all that that eventually got her to clean up, but still, if the other guys a convicted felon...hmm...
Assumingly,

Yeah, I was thinking that since you can't give custody to a felon, Ada didn't get custody 'cos she's a felon.
And who said she gets the kid? <IMG SRC="

_We_ do, damn it! Cause we want Ada to live happily ever after, and Gin to have someone remotely her age to spend time with.
...
...
So there.
(Plus the reunion scene would probably end up as cool as the 17th's strip)

Ah, I see! "Canne'" as in "can not", alright, never mind. I probably should have said that out loud first, I think I've probably heard that before. Oh well, back to speculation.
