::thinks::
::blink::
BJ? Jackie's never been in love, has she?
The signs would seem to point out that Jackie hasn't ever had a serious relationship. And deep down that bothers her, so she deliberately doesn't notice it. If that makes sense.
We don't know what Jackie's preferences are because she doesn't know. BJ knows because he's God in this universe. And he can change his mind if he wants to.
I don't know about the Ranma 1/2 stuff because I've never read it. Sounds like it's downfall was that it was too static. It's ok to have recurring themes, but as someone pointed out, themes must progress. Then again, no story lasts forever.
I've always maintained the theory that no matter what a person's declared sexuality, there's always one person out there who is just the right person to make you change. Meeting that person causes a world of confusion unless you can realize that you only swing THAT way for THAT person.
Doc
[This message has been edited by DocMan (edited 09-04-2001).]

The way I perceive it goes kinna like this:
* Jackie has never really been involved with anyone seriously.
* Jackie has never THOUGHT about it, really, and really doesn't think she's that attractive.
* The fact that Caryn, another woman, thinks she's pretty and wants to go out with her shakes up Jackie's world-view a little bit.
* Jackie is now kind of looking around her world 'with open eyes', as it were.
* Jackie sees the topless Ada and, with her new world-view in place, suddenly realizes just how attractive Ada is.
* Jackie gets embarassed by the fact that she's staring, and rather than admit to Ada that she actually finds her attractive (considering their conversation about Caryn and her sexual preference) says she's jealous, while in actuality she's just starting to notice people around her as being attractive, specifically to HER.
That's my take on it. =)
-PsychoBlonde

Oh, come ON, people!
Just because the comic is gay friendly doesn't mean that every character has to become gay.
Jackie, as the main character, is pretty much doomed to a life of sexual frustration. Not because that's what BJ wants, but because that's what keeps us, the audience, interested in her and her life. It's part of what keeps us coming back for more. This is why main characters never have committed relationships on Star Trek. Once the relationship is established, it becomes boring.
However, in this scene, Ada and Jackie have just locked Caryn out to ensure their privacy. Is it so far fetched that, having just taken steps to ensure privacy, Jackie would be surprised that Ada would so blithely expose herself? That Jackie might even be a bit shocked by such behavior? And that she might be further embarrased by her own response?
I'm not surprised by the glut of fantasies, but sheesh! Reign them in a notch and wait for Wednesday!
Doc

Actually, I kind of envision Jackie experiencing something like what most guys go through in their teen years, where EVERY FUCKING THING YOU SEE reminds you of sex. Except in her case, she's going to be constantly thinking, "Am I attracted to [whatever this is]? I never thought about it before..." before finally figuring out what it is she really is attracted to - which is probably just "guys" or "girls" or "both", without anything particularly exotic attached, but in the meantime, I think she's going to be *very* confused woman.

I think you're reaching a bit, Doc. =) Trust me, I honestly doubt Jackie would be 'shocked' that Ada would 'expose herself' like that. Women do it all the time, when they're close friends. We're less hung up about being nekkid around each other than guys are. =)
Yes, we should wait 'til weds, but I think you'll be proven wrong. =)
-PsychoBlonde

Now first of all PsychoBlonde is turning
the entire cast bi! BI!
No I'm not leaving *g*
Second of all even if you may be bi, doesn't
mean you're not doomed to a life unending
sexual frustration. (Believe me I know )
Jackie and Caryn may have compatible orientations,
but that doesn't mean they'll end up in a
commited relationship, they may never get together
If you know what I mean *nudge-nudge*. Jackie may decide
that although Caryn can rock her world between the sheets
she'd rather do the long term commitment thing with Victor.

------------------

Y'know... if these guys are fighting and griping this hard about Jackie maybe deciding she likes girls, imagine how bad they'd hissyfit if Victor and Shannon kissed? ^.^
Of course, IRL Shannon's wife might hissyfit more than anyone. n.-
------------------

I'm not sure why you're so defensive, Rann, but you aren't making much sense to me. You seem to have taken my simple statement of opinion, which I tried very hard to make non-offensive, and have reacted to it as a personal attack.
While I'm flattered that you take my words so seriously, it's a bit much.
From this point on, Rann, I am not going to respond to your posts. Hampster, what makes you think Caryn wouldn't do the long-term commitment thing? Just 'cause she's hyper and out there doesn't mean that all she's interested in is flings. She asked Jackie out on a date when they met, not to a hotel. ^_^ And, DocMan, that's not necessarily true. There can be entertainment and enjoyment without watching sexual frustration. Personally, I get tired of seeing the main characters constantly being frustrated and shot down. That's why I don't like Peanuts anymore, and I'm getting burned out on Frasier. I'd be much more interested in seeing the interesting interaction that would come of Jackie and Caryn dating, or even living together. ^o^
------------------

Baa, I am tired of talking about how attractive one person or another is.
I find it terrifying that there are chemicals coursing through my veins that would so fundamentally alter my perceptions as to create this false sense of beauty.
Change the code, and I would feel the same lust for a housefly.

Naw, I was just focussing on all the negative posibilities because I was in a hurry, I really don't have time to be making this reply actually... *shrugs* Because that's what DocMan was so interested in, I don't mean that in a bad way btw.
More posibilities, Caryn may turn Jackie gay,
only to have Jackie run off with Teagan.
um. Victor may get tired of pining for Jackie, while Shannon realizes he can never be with Melissa- and they end up a couple.
Hell, everybody may just date/hangout with
everyone else and have lot's of casual sex,
or hangout and not have casual sex. Or Jackie may date Caryn or may date Victor.
Or Jackie may get trapped in a loveless sexless marriage with Victor, or Caryn.
Or Jackie might stay her loveable asexual
self and drive everyone with a libido around her nuts.
or... or... or... Ahhh!
Waiting for Wednesday
------------------

I'm turning the cast whatever will make them go out with me. =)
And yeah, I know all about the bi != no sexual frustration thing. Blah. Grr. Oh well.
As far as the sexual frustration thing being what brings people back? I dunno. Personally, what brings me back to the strip all the time is that I honestly care about the characters, because they're people I really want to know. I want to see Jackie get into a relationship with someone (hopefully me!), I like watching her live her life, I like watching the other characters live THEIR lives. Personally, I get annoyed at constant frustration in comics. I hate a lack of 'closure' on things. Ah well. =)
I think Jackie should become gay and start dating Caryn. Even if they end up breaking up and seeing other people, it would be a fun path for Jackie's life to take. Open up a whole new world for her.
I guess we'll see tomorrow. =)
-PsychoBlonde

Wow, you guys. Um....
Wow.
Here's my two cents. I believe that everybody is born bisexual, and we all lean farther one way or the other. Heteros lean more toward the opposite sex, gay folks lean toward the same sex. If you're bisexual, you're still in the middle. If you can be "turned" (an idea I don't agree with), you're closer to the middle than you thought.
What messes up the preceeding opinion is the following: I also believe that one's environment and upbrining has something to do with how you act on your sexual orientation. Caryn most likely didn't even think about having a same-sex relationship until she met that one woman who was just cool enough to start her thinking that way.
I dunno. This would all make more sense if I hadn't just woke up and didn't have to be at work in 20 minutes...
------------------

Huh? "fighting and griping"? I just said that people were going overboard with their fantasies and talked a bit about storytelling in general. My own preferences have never been mentioned, and actually don't enter into the discussion as I'm not a character in this strip.
And actually, I can envision quite a number of gags that would have Shannon and Victor kissing. But none of them would include either of them becoming homosexual.
And having seen today's strip, I don't think sexuality enters into it. Caryn is being mistreated because she's got a big mouth. Sorry, Caryn. Just my take on it.
Doc

PsychoBlonde thinks people need to calm down?! o.O O.o THE WORLD IS ENDING! It's the end times!

The original sketch of Rann running around flailing has been cancelled. Those responsible for the sketch have been sacked. Thank you.

Freud believed everyone was born bi, too. So did Kinsey (the infamous Kinsey report- the oft misquoted idea that 1 out of 10 people is gay). I just thought I'd throw that in
I don't think it's overanalyzing the comic to follow certain ideas to their logical conclusions. Jackie says she has practiced not thinking about who she is attracted to. Now she's staring at Ada, and fumbles for an excuse. She's not necissarily attracted to Ada, but she's clearly thinking about it. I think it's also safe to assume that it will be a long time before Jackie becomes confident enough in her sexuality to have a relationship with *anyone.*
------------------
