By the way, it's nice to see a cellist in a webcomic (I was a violist until the neighborhood committee ran out of earplugs. Now I recognize that my musical talents, whatever they are, aren't in performance. My signature comes from my interest in classical music, despite appearances... it's the first line of a poem quoted on top of a piano piece I like.)

Which piano piece? Are there any recordings I can look for?<P>I played violin for years, then got bored of it. When my director suggested I take up cello instead, I jumped at the chance and loved every minute of it. I'd really like to pick it up again...it's such a wonderful instrument.

It's a long piece (bout a half-hour) called (appropriately) the "Night Wind" sonata - or sometimes just the sonata in e minor, opus 25, number 2 - by Nicolai Medtner (1881-1950, if memory serves.) He was a good friend of Rachmaninoff's but concentrated a lot more
on writing for the piano (no symphonies, tone-poems, what have you for <B>him</B> - just piano pieces (including 14 sonatas), violin and piano works, 3 concerti for piano, lots and lots of songs (including one entitled sonate-vocalise, hasn't been recorded for decades that one though) and a piano quintet...)
I know of a few recordings of the "Night Wind" sonata but have only really heard three, I guess. I'm most familiar with Adam Fellegi's ok one on the Marco Polo label. (If you have Windows Media Player and go to <A HREF="http://www.hnh.com" TARGET=_blank>http://www.hnh.com</A> and search for Medtner you can audition the work for free, though in deliberately worse sound than on the actual CD. I guess they still want you to have some incentive to buy the thing.
Considering that the other sites I know of only let you listen to one-minute samples generally speaking instead of whole CDs I can put up with lower-quality sound, but anyway.) There are probably recordings out there that are a lot better based on what else I've heard by the people who play them (Hamelin on Hyperion, for instance,) and one of these days I am going to find time in this (evidence of words rubbed out by something- paw marks?? Bad <A HREF="http://www.lightlink.com/schissel/orab.html" TARGET=_blank>Cleo</A>!) that I call a schedule to go to the library and <B>listen</B> to these others...

Certainly wish I were still performing viola (but as I said, it proved not to be one of my talents. Cue Asterix joke.) May I ask if your current repertoire contains anything very interesting, and also if you're open to a suggestion or two? (Some of the cello pieces I've heard have been sufficiently good that I try to give them wider exposure if I can. Similarly if I meet violists who, unlike me, <I><B>are</B></I> still playing, and they're in the mood to try something new, I have something to suggest. I actually haven't had a haircut since the end of October, when i shaved my head for the Halloween party. My hair grows slow... but it's almost to the point that I can do something with a brush now... I'm thinking I need to shave it again. Maybe not bald, but shorter...<P>Oh. I can probably score a copy of the Hyperion release pretty easily...<P>Yeah, sadly, I haven't picked up a cello in years. siiigh.<P>One piece springs to mind: Rostropovich's performance of Bach's Brandenburgh Concertos (I know, mundane stuff, but still). His performance has such richness and soul to it that when I listen to the discs, I just ache.<P>I'm more into bad pop music than anything else, but those discs (on EMI, I think) are just marvellous. I've also got Copeland's Red Pony around here somewhere (on vinyl!!). Grew up listening to it; sick of hearing the Fanfare for the Common Man constantly in favour of this one. It should be available on CD by now....<P>Oh, and a footnote: the best Fanfare for the Common Man has to be the Canadian Brass arrangement. Wow.

I love Cello music! I own a cello but I never learned to play it; I play piano though. For some reason I learned to play and memorized virtuosic music first and now I'm going back and learning easier pieces.<P>I recently wrote a song called "Duet for Cello and Piano No. 1" because I was so inspired by Yo-Yo Ma's Cello playing. It's all up at <A HREF="http://www.mp3.com/brianyoung" TARGET=_blank>http://www.mp3.com/brianyoung</A> and some of my actual piano playing will be there soon.
