In the interest of stoking up some commentery here, I will now say something else that everyone will ignore.
After reading the reccent comments about how BJ tries to freeze the action, and draw the characters at that instant, I really have to say that he does a darned nifty job of it. Monday's strip is particularly exemplary of it, in that I can actually picture the action that led up to that freeze frame. One neat thing about the way the characters are drawn with big hands is that it really gives expression and feeling of motion to the characters. Small hands are good for still shot, but those large hands are ideal for what is being done here.
Also related to Monday's strip, I was wondering what Jackie was cooking when she was called by that telemarketer.
-Zodo

Once again, thanx for the kind comments. It's nice to know someone actually sees where I'm coming from (unless you're humoring me, in which case, pppbbllt).
Jackie can only cook one thing: Mac & Cheez. As a matter of utmost fact, that's exactly what she was cooking when the telemarketer called (and I'm not just patronizing you--I actually had that in mind when I drew the strips).
Zodo, I'd say you're my #1 fan, but you seem to be my only fan. siiiigh. Thanks for being around to spark conversations.

Mac'n'sleaze forever!
My cupboard currently has two boxes of deluxe Mac'n cheese, various shapes of pasta, two jars of sauce (one spaghetti sauce, one cheese sauce) and 8 packages of ramen.
I actually can cook some really decent stuff, and have even developed my own poultry seasoning, but when I'm cooking for just myself, there's nobody else to impress, so I just keep it simple.
In reference to Monday's comments, I screen my calls too. I've been thinking to change my answering machine message to:
Hi, you've reached Sean's Answering Machine. If you're a telemarketer, please place me on your permanent "Do not call" list. If you are a real person, please leave your name, number, a brief message, and your favorite color, because I may be screening the call. If I'm not actually here, I'll call you back as soon as I can.
Currently it just asks for the name, number, message, and favorite color.
-Zodo

Thanks Pooga--I wasn't fishing, but it's still nice to hear.
I was actually worried that folks would think I was ripping off Maison Ikkoku with the Jackie's Fridge setting (and I've admitted to basing Jackie's red hair on Akemi's), but everyone seems to like it, as you said, on its own terms.
The only reason I knock my artistic ability is....well the two reasons are 1) I've never really studied art, I'm self-taught and 2) I know I can do better, and if I get complacent, all is lost.
I see a lot of really cool art out there (most of it independant) and strive to be that good. And you see the stuff I want you to see. You're never gonna see the stuff that doesn't turn out, and there's plenty.
Okay, so to revise an earlier statement: Zodo is JF's most vociferous fan, but there are others, lurking, just waiting until I reveal what I have in store for Melissa & Gin. Hee hee hee......
Thanks everybody for reading the strip, whether you post or not.
And thanks Pooga for sticking around, even though you realized that JoBeth! is pretty limited as a comic strip. Glad we could give you the real stuff!

I don't think I would've stuck around JoBeth.net long enough to see Tonja Steele if Jackie's Fridge hadn't been starting up when I first started visiting. As I've said before, while I by no means loathe JoBeth, I don't think it's all that great a concept. It was Jackie that kept me coming back.
I think part of it was an initial similarity to Maison Ikkuko (sp?). I am a big fan of Rumiko Takahashi, and the apartment house setting and magna-ish style of JF interested me. I've come to enjoy it on it's own terms since then, but I think that was the initial attractor. I lurk the message boards, but just because I don't post often doesn't mean I don't stop by daily.
For someone who's always knocking his artistic ability, you turn out one of the prettier strips on the web. Okay, sometimes it's busy. I LIKE busy! It probably just means that the strip isn't the best format for Jackie. With the ongoing storylines and level of detail, I wonder if a comic-book page size might not be better. A larger canvas, so to speak. Of course, if you're still doing this for the Pointer, I suppose you don't get much say in how much space you can take...
Urgh. This has gotten a bit long and rambly. All I meamt to say is I really like your work, and especially Jackie's Fridge!
Pooga
[This message has been edited by Pooga (edited 09-01-2000).]

Hi!
^_^
I gotta agree what a bunch of other people are saying. Your art's AMAZING! One of the best looking webcomics this side of the galaxy. It's not easy finding good anime/manga-ish art style comics these days...
Well, it looks better then mine anyway.
-Caster

Ya know, I was just thinking, (and when I think at 5 in the morning, it's ALWAYS dangerous ) since we've had the obligatory nekkid JoBeth (Yay! Bippy!) and since Jackie's Fridge is 'Anime-esque', when do we get the obligatory shower scene?
I bet this is a question that could get our lurking fans talking... Any of you wanna see an anime shower scene with Jackie or Ada (or both) in it?
-Zodo

I suppose I'll add to the fanbase on this section of the forum, since the Matrix is the only thing going on on the JoBeth site (JoBeth + Keanu Reeves? Scary, but not shocking), and Green grins are going on on the Tonja Steele site (Sorry, I can't help myself )
BJ insists he can't draw anatomy, but I insist that everyone tells him he's full of it. He should be an animator. If I could draw that well without any life drawing classes, I'd be well on my way to Disney by now. Ah, well. There is a compliment buried in all that, I think...

Joey, thanx for the compliment. Actually, I really needed one today.
So anyway, I think this discussion has drifted from the original post, and should be moved to a more appropriate place. There, all will be revealed!
Oh wait....that didn't sound good.

All right, all you ecchiphiles out there - you asked for it, but now BJ wants more info. Check out the site (even if you've been there already today), and use the BeSeen Quizlet that pops up to VOTE for who you most want to see nekkid from the JF cast!
For you lazy folks, go here.
