"Jackie's Fridge" gets two thumbs up.

I really like the comic. It makes me laugh, which is a good thing, mind you.
I enjoy the Ada character, and I hope she remains a major player in the comic. I too enjoy Worchesshire... Worchester... Worshister... However you spell that.
"I'm designed to make ice, not break it."
*Laughs*
Classic.
------------------

Hey Arisha, thanx for liking my little thing I do. About the annotations, I'm a little behind, but I have them written. I just keep forgetting to bring the disk with me (I don't have a computer, so I have to do all this at work (!!), which means I usually stay after work waaaay too long).
As soon as I send the new annotations to Shannon, he'll put them up on the archives. We like Shannon. We also like Shannon's cat, Anna.
--BJ

By the way, Karva...
I do have an iguana. His name is Ash (NOT Pokemon) and he's a brat. Guess which Ash he's named after, and win an impressed raise of the eyebrow.
--BJ
------------------

It was sad because he was my best friend, but I'm over it.

Actually, I do like Ada quite a bit. You'll see her as often as I can stand to stick Zipatone on her. Love her to death, but she takes the LONGEST time to draw.
Thanx for the kind words, Karva. I will continue to try to make you laugh, which should be fun; I draw to amuse myself, and if you like the same stuff, then we're home free!!
------------------

I also like this strip. Especially the fridge. "It was an emergency. I panicked." That's a great line. ;D
I'll be sure to come back Friday to meet the new character!

Oh - and I also like the way you've got the author's notes after the older ones. Maybe it's just me, but I find things like that interesting.

bj... pardon my ignorance, but what exaclt is zipatone? btw.. i also really dig your comic. i read through the archive up to date and can't wait to read more. plus, i also like the annotations. i did the same thing with my strip in the archives section. for me, it's a way to try and help get people into my head, what i was thinking when i did a comic, or if its based in real life, or an opportunity for me to explain if the strip turned out to be a little less than effective. anyways.. like i said, look forward to more of your stuff !
Rick

I don't have an iguana...but I have three cats (was four - they're Anna, Onyx, and Lundie), one of which will hopefully be living with BJ at some point in the future; a ton of fish (one 45-gallon cichlid aquarium for my wife, who likes 'pretty fish', and a 55-gallon brackish aquarium for myself - apparently I like 'ugly fish'), and two snakes, both Ball Pythons who we hope will breed someday. Heck, you can get $40-50 each for the babies, easy, and they tend to lay 6-7 eggs a clutch. Unfortunately, a) they only mate once a year, and b) we still don't know if we've got a male AND a female, or just two females. Kinda hard to tell with them.
Hey, Karva - any ideas for names for them? Right now we just call them 'Snake' and 'The Other Snake'. I'll gratefully consider any suggestions.

Okay Karva,
You get the impressed raise of the eyebrow. He's named after Ash from the Evil Dead series.
And Shannon--I really like "Snake" and "Other Snake" as names. Something about it just....clicks. Remember, Beq's guinea pig had a "real" name, and we all just ended up calling him "Pig" all the time anyway.
And hey everybody! I will be introducing a guinea pig into the Jackie's Fridge universe sometime in January. He is evil and plots to take over the world. If anybody's interested, I will spill most--but not all--of the beans about him.
--BJ
------------------

Sure.
I always liked the names: Nina and Nino. The female can be Nina, and the male can be Nino. It could be cute...
Unless, of course, they're both female...
Hmmm...
I can't think of any more right now. I'll reply back when I do!

Hey Smudge, thanks for making this the flaming discussion!
Actually, for the strips you're reading now, I got sick of using Zip (the brand I use is Formatt) and just diagonally hatched Ada's skin. The technical term for that is "cheating".
And even though the strips starting in December will have Shannon's touch on her skintone, I'm still gonna have to go back to the original art and hand-zip each Ada appearance for print.
Siiiiiigh.....
I'm gonna start a new string for technique, just 'cos we've wandered off subject. My history lesson for the day regarding Zipatone and such is there....I am so long winded.
--BJ
------------------

Barclay, U.S.A.
Zipatone is used by comic strip and comic book artists to fill in areas on their work without having to shade it all by pencil. I believe it is something that you can cut off a sheet in the shape of the space you want to fill, then apply it like a temporary tattoo directly to the paper. Essentially it's the equivalent of the "fill" function of a graphics program.
I am not an artist myself, so I've never used it. Hey Zodo, you beat me to it.
Zipatone is the brand name (like "Xerox") for a type of tone sheet. The stuff I use is actually a different brand.
Basically, Zip comes in two different styles. The type I use comes in a biiig sheet (slightly larger than a sheet of legal sized, 8.5x14" paper) that's basically a self-adhesive clear plastic (like invisible tape) with machine printed dots on one side. The dots come in different sizes and densities (Ada's skin tone is 40% black, but I forget the dot pitch) and you can even get Zip in patterns, textures and the like.
The other type of Zip is a rub-on transfer, which is good for effects, but bad for fills.
Basically, I use Zip 'cos it looks more professional than hatching (which I've never been able to do well; look at Gerard's backgrounds in Cerebus for a prime example of the power of hatching.) It just takes a while to cut it to shape with an X-acto blade and paste it on.
And Rick--that's the exact reason I do the annotations. I'm always interested in the behind-the-scenes stuff, and sometimes, the story behind a comic is more interesting than the comic itself.
--BJ
------------------

And an interesting note for the future - although the JF strips that run in the Pointer will still have Ada zipped, the strips appearing on the website from Christmas on will be using an actual grey, which
A) is easier on the eyes, and will blend with BJ's style a bit better than the dots do, and
B) won't moire out when resized, like the dots do. "Moiring" is when the dots blend and make goofy patterns because they were shrunk down. For example...
This is a regular dot pattern, kinda like the tone BJ uses now:

Now, if you shrink that down to 25% of it's original size, this is what you get:

It ain't pretty. We've managed to overcome it on some of the later strips, but Ada's skin tone will look a bit more...even, once we start doing it by computer.
Anyway.
