ADA HATES ANIME!?!

I was watching a documentary about vaudeville on public television, with a focus on the number of performers who worked in blackface. Basically, they had come up with this stereotype that black people were simple people whose real, true happiness came from performing for white people.
Basically, during the time, this was the only way black people could really be portrayed on the stage. Black people on the stage often put on blackface makeup, just like the white performers! And any black performers that did dare to take themselves seriously, wear nice, tasteful suits and sing about anything other than dinner and watermelon and so on, were denied opportunities that the black performers who "laughed at themselves" were. Basically, if they didn't embody the stereotype about them, they couldn't work.
While I'm not comparing the thoughts about anime fans to the struggle against racism, I'm just trying to draw a parallel. Yes, there are the visions of the fat, unwashed fanboy wandering around trying for twisted hentai art commissions (those who attend cons may be familiar with "Captain Oogy") and the heavyset woman (or man) in Sailor Senshi fuku. But I think the problem is when it gets to where almost every portrayal of an anime fan is like this. Where that's practically all you see of them.
So, why shouldn't we take ourselves seriously? People who work to make conventions happen REALLY WORK, practically killing themselves to set things up, and the artists and sellers often put a considerable chunk of money on the line to get themselves there and set up shop. Even the fans that attend may put themselves through hell and high water to get there and enjoy what they love with other people that love it. So I think anime conventioneers deserve to take themselves at least a bit seriously.
Poe recently did an anime convention storyline in Exploitation Now. And while he did have a lot of stereotypes like the unwashed fanboy and the men in Senshi fukus, what I thought was great about it was that you also saw attractive, normal people attending the convention. In particular, Jordan being an anime fan is great, I think. ^^ She's pretty, intelligent, and confident in herself, so her being an anime fan is like an ego boost. ... Not to mention the fact that she actually builds anime stuff! Heheheh.
Oh, and to wrap up, to further explain a bida... Japanese kids make that sound when they stick their tongues out, kind of like kids in America and other anglo countries go "Phbbt!" It is often accompanied by pulling down one eyelid, to make more of a face.
BIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIDA! ;p Heheheheh.

Hey, my sister hates Anime. It isn't that unusual a trait in the female population, I've found.
I also found that it was a good bit of irony, esp. considering the comments made during the JF/TS crossover ("...Anime Chicks" anyone?), so, maybe someone IStaking themselves Too seriously, eh?

I think EVERYONE takes themselves too seriously. Have a pixie stick! On me!
Hey, that tickles!
..
I didn't tell you to stop.
Thaaaats better.
Ahem.
Now, where was I? Oh yes, seriousness, don't.
I mean, isn't the world serious enough without fan factions yelling at each other for not liking this or that, even to the point of lableing each other with stereotypes?
To be fair, that WAS a little harsh as far as punchlines usually go around here, but "seriously", let's give him a break. Everyone's comic get's a little mean every now and then. Ozy and Millie, even. I mean, like, dude.
And I can't pass judgement on Sailor Moon because I haven't seen it, but it DOES look pretty damning to us outsiders, who basically see scantily clad schoolgirls who are sometimes even more scantily clad superheroes.
------------------

Let's end this now.
Point 1: Freddy is a dick. Look at what he did to Ada - bumped her room which she has reserved two months in advance so he could have one extra room for cenventioneers. OBVIOUSLY a dickish thing to do.
Point 2: Do you really CARE how a dick like Freddy feels about the subject? Does anyone?
Point 3: ADA doesn't like anime. SHE didn't say anything about not liking PEOPLE who like anime. And for those of you who are ready to write her off, after almost 18 months of getting to know her and love her, JUST because she doesn't like a particular form of animation, shame on you.
Point 4: Does BJ REALLY need to put a disclaimer on his website that states "The opinions of each and every character in this comic do not necessarily reflect the opinions of the creator", or can we just assume that, read the story as we always have, and not go ballistic at every assumed slight? I mean dear GOD, what are you going to do when we finally get to know Carl, the king Dick of Dick Mountain? Are we going to lambast BJ for every insensitive thing Carl says, too?
Please, get over it, and go back to enjoying BJ's story.
-Shannon

random
On the changing sheets joke:
After going to anime cons myself, I have seen these types of people most often:
Male
Overweight
Poor Hygiene
Obessive
clueless
(hitting on me when I didn't look attached)
The second type is the same only cross dressed and/or pre/post transvestite.
Don't forget, anime cons have ddr now and the above type or people don't know what deoderant is.*air I need air*
The third type is:
clueless
mainsteamer
male or female
likes only one show such as Sailor Moon/ Dragon Ball or DBZ
( at the cons I went to, there was nothing there for those types) *points and laughs*
I personally like anime and going to cons, it's just no matter what type of gathering you go to, you'll find a certain set of people which will typically go.(why is there a disproportionate amount of left handed people in the EE department??)
/random

Er, DocMan, I dare you to find one quote where I told BJ "not to do it again" and acted as if he lived to craft the comic to my personal specifications.
I offered my opinion on a strip, and that opinion happened to be negative. I'm sorry, but I refuse to turn into one of those sycophantic forumers that will only give unwavering adoration to the artist in whose forum they speak, and only allow it from other posters. If I wanted that, I could have stayed in the PVP Forums where Kurtz is worshipped as a god and anyone that thinks differently than he does must be run off the forums.
If I didn't respect BJ, you can bet I wouldn't be making points and saying "I didn't like this, I think you can do better". I'd be ripping him a new one and insulting his ancestry.
I converse with a number of my fellow writers, and I know for a fact that the GOOD ONES prefer it when I'm honest and tell them I don't like something, and I prefer the same.
So I'm sorry, but I refuse to worship every Jackie's Fridge strip just because it's Jackie's Fridge. I reserve the right to my opinion, and I STILL didn't like the strip in question.
You'll note that I never said BJ was trying to destroy anime fandom or something like that. I just said I didn't like the strip and thought it was insulting. And you'll note, DocMan, that the hotel manager does not take the time to make distinctions that this is "the worst of the fandom", but implies that it is EVERY SINGLE PERSON that stays at that hotel. And why should I laugh at the people I hang out with, too? I like the people I hang out with. While you may be part of this "machismo" group dynamic where everyone insults everyone else and laughs at their misfortunes, I don't care to.
People who constantly say "laugh at yourself" obviously never had a childhood roughly paralleling Charlie Brown's, and probably think Peanuts is a laugh riot.
------------------

There's a reason I usually stay out of these arguements, but I'm going to voice my opinion.
There's good anime, bad anime, and untouchable anime.
I like anime. I like American Animation (especially if people with the last names of "Dini," "Timm," and "Tartakovsky" are helping to make it.) as well. Other people like anime. Most of them don't like American Animation because it's American. Those people suck. Other people like both. That's cool. Some people watch some anime and don't really like it for some reason or another OTHER than it being anime. That's cool too.
In conclusion: People like anime. Other people don't like anime. Simple as that. Now time to stop arguing.
