An example of this being that it's a lot funnier to show the crew huddled together agreeing that dealing with the lawyers would be a bad thing than it is to describe it in a line or so, or simply put a comment of "pause" in the text. Or show the look on the other guy's face when he's saying "we don't know who it is yet". As for the original subject, I'm guessing it goes something like this. Comic starts, none of the side links work, people don't bother checking them again. Thus when the forum is up, people don't notice. And even if Ian or Webby makes a comment about it in the news, it's possible it could get overlooked. I don't know about anyone else, but a few lines of text crammed underneath the comic with the page ending right after it is relatively easy for me to overlook. On 2002-03-10 14:46, FlamingDeth wrote:
Yes, you can have text based jokes. However, the humor used in the comics is of a type I don't think would work with out some sort of visual representation.

See, what people have been saying about how comics are optimal because the art and text work together and compliment eachother is what I try to explain to people all the time. It's amazing how many funny looks I get when I tell people that I like comics. They often don't seem to understand that comics can be more than just dumb kids stories and super hero hero books (not that all kids stories and super here books are dumb). I love the way comics utilize both text and art and can invoke a sense of movement in book form (cartoons are good too, but for some reason I like comics better). Well, there's my rant for the day....

Hmmm...the problem with that is that in most comics I read, the art is equally important as the wording. And where in the negative space the words are placed. And the frame layout on larger pages. And colour choice. And about a million other things. All in all, it just takes more work than you'd think to do a comic, and I applaude the effort and success of both Webby and IanJ...and I'm done ranting.
Ya, the artwork is pretty spiffy.
Would have been kewl if somewhere in the background of the lawyers was a depiction of Johnny Cochran
The random StarSomething Quote at the top of the page is also a treat

And although I will probably get stoned by my fellow Australians..
I grew up with Cricket..
Yes, it DOES indeed.. suck..

and now that I have actually read all the post before doing a reply.. *ahem*..
As someone mentioned, these are early days in the comics life.
Let's be honest, how many webcomics have had the website redesigned at LEAST once over the course of their lives as they grow?
As for the linking of art and text..
1 example: The Far Side
I think that sums up the link between nicely
(and if you have never read The Far Side.. missing out
)

I've used that method of selection before. It works. Unless you perfer something GOOD to come of your selecting. On 2002-03-17 14:32, FlamingDeth wrote:
First, third page of the thread...we're cooking with fire now, eh?
Second, everbody needs to read the Far Side. The Far Side owns you, though not as much as StarSomething.
Lastly, interesting method of selection. So efficient, methodical, and desisive that they must be government.

In australia, cricket is a way of life. We just accept it, and understand it without a thought. It might be genetic - the cricket understanding gene is unique to southern hemisphere climates.
Then again, I dont understand the point of baseball.
I've never bothered to put together a comic, because as previously said by someone, it is a lot of work and my inherant lazyness is somewhat larger than my muse, largely because my lazyness spends time sitting on the couch getting fat, wheras my muse is constantly nagging me to go run around with her. Thus my lazyness often crushed my muse by threatening to sit on her (yes, my lazyness is male)
Whilst it is possible to be funny without using good art (the stick figure pr0n sites being a perfect example thereof), good use of good art always adds a level. Its not enough for the art to be merely good, the art has to tie in with the storyline through style as well as through what it depicts. Form influences meaning and such.
Much kudos to Ian J and webrunner for this. I dont think I've ever actually seen a funny sci-fi comic before.
