(OT) Power Tower

Post by Batty den »

Looks like Enviromission http://www.enviromission.com.au/index1.htm (flash req.) will be building a 1000m high tower in the outback of this state. According to the BBC at http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/2628361.stm air movedments in the tower will generate enough "electricity for 200,000 homes. It will save more than 700,000 tonnes of greenhouse gases which may otherwise have been emitted by coal- or oil-fired power stations."

200,000 homes would be pretty much all of New South Wales west of Sydney, and excluding a few of the larger towns.

It would be nice to see it happen.

That made the /. news some 3 months ago +-, and it hit the main news wires here this past week as well.

Cool stuff, I don't see it happening here any time soon due to land use issues. Spain already has one of these towers on a smaller scall iirc???

Tnx for the links!

The project now has the backing of the NSW State Government as well as the Federal Government. When it was on /. it didn't. And there's a photo of the Spanish tower on the Enviromissions site.

Land won't be a problem Out There. There's a lot of it, and it's pretty empty.
