I spent too much time looking at this last night

And came up with this instead of sleeping:

That soulful gaze is exactly why I've ended up sharing my cave with three cats.

I should admit that I found the song on the Freefall Forum, and
was therefore inspired to come up with this for those guys:

Working title: "Where is Dr. Bowman going...?"

The Unicorn Legend

Post by ZOMBIE USER 7666 »

For the past couple of months, I've been working on a love story.

For those of you who frequent the "Freefall" Forum, you have already heard something about "The Unicorn Legend."

I had never heard this wonderfully cute song, "Winds Nocturne" until only a few weeks ago.

I am nearly in tears at listening to this song...seeing Florence as a puppy as pictured by Scott's piece of artwork...and the following lyrics from the song:

We all need to believe there is hope

Is an angel watching closely over me?
(yes -- a Unicorn Guardian)

Can there be a guilding light I've yet to see? (yes)

I know my heart should guide me but

There's a hole within my soul

What will fill this emptiness inside of me?

Am I to be satisfied without knowing?

I wish then for a chance to see

Now all I need -- desperately

Is my star to come...
(when the time is right)

~~~{ }~~~
I hope to have the introduction and the first chapter of the "Unicorn Legend" posted on my website within a few weeks--maybe sooner. I have plans for not just a written story, but artwork and animations to accompany the telling of the story too.
Thank you Scott for the spiritual motivation that I needed to answer my question.
"It is time!"
NOTE:
Coming soon! The telling of the "Unicorn Legend." A love story from the world's of Mark Stanley's "Freefall" and S.Kidwell's "The White Guardian."
The nice thing about forums (forae?) is that creative energy gets
shared and kicks into a chain reaction. :)
Mark Stanley inspires me, so I do something. That inspires White Pony,
and Mark to do things. White Pony inspires Mark and me. I do more
stuff, and that helps inspire Level Head and Batty, and Level Head inspires
it's becoming like 6.02*10^23 ping pong balls atop mouse traps, going
off!
Which sounds like a really odd way to say "Thank You" to everyone
here, but it's fun anyway. :)
Mark Stanley inspired me to do my first ever fan peice. It's a short story on his fan-art page.
Your first pic reminds me of one of my very first animal rescues. A bloke rang to say he had some young possums. When I arrived he handed me a sealed box and said "I found them while I was digging up a fox hole." I opened the box and was greeted by the sight of six tiny, black, fluffy fox-kits. I said I'd find someone who could take care of them. They were so cute, but foxes are a noxious animal here and it's illegal to keep them.
So it Is! I read that a long time ago. Better go re-read it. :)
Oh boy. I'm sorry, Batty... :cry:
I'd forgotten that foxes are a real problem down there.
Foxes are very adaptable and they compete with the local
marsupial population. Not good. :(
Problem is that hunting them just isn't an effective means
of controlling their population either. When they're hunted,
foxes disperse farther and farther afield, so the population
just spreads out into new territory. Between feral housecats,
rabbits and foxes, Australia's natural wildlife is in for tough
times. :cry:
Here's hoping that kind people such as yourself, making
intelligent well educated decisions (tough ones to be sure)
can solve the problems one day.
As do I.
Very nice -- and it includes recognition of Florence's early quadruped time.
I am consistently impressed by your clean and "good feeling" art.
One of the things that struck me about Mark Stanley's "Freefall" was the "connectedness" of it. For example, Winston looks at a picture of Florence as a wolf-pup with her first human, and a keen observer would remember that this picture was part of the personal effects that Sam and Helix pawed through before we had ever seen Florence "in the flesh". It is, indeed, exactly the same picture.
You also carry that "internal consistency" in your work, and execute it very well indeed. I'm already inclined to like the character, as everyone here is tired of my explaining. ;) But I have seen many other artists attempt Florence renditions, and some of them have made me wince.
Yours is far and away the best. Paws down.
Scott, I just now saw your Florence! Somehow, I had skipped from "Jack-in-the-box" to White Pony's encounter and missed the middle section!
That really is Florence! Excellent. One of the curiosities about Florence is that her ears are frequently assymetrical -- and you caught that perfectly. Great expression -- and a great title.
I imagine that Doctor Bowman is looking for new ... papers to , um, submit. Puppies need this as much as scientific journals, you know. ;)
Awwwww.............
Post by Hortmage »
<Sigh>
I get such major feelings of inadequacy when I see the talent displayed here.
I saw the "Jack in the Box" on the main page -- very handsomely done! May I have permission to download it for my wallpaper?
Then, I see how much that doggy in the window is.... I'd pay $5 for her on the spot, even if she never did speak.... Has this been cross-posted on the Free Fall forum yet? (*Hortmage does a quick check....nope!*)
[Edit:] I just went back and looked through the pictures again. Scott's working title, "Where is Dr. Bowman going...?" has me getting a little misty-eyed. Oh, that is heart-breaking.... :cry: How could anyone let something that cute go?
But White Pony's comeback picture, of Epon finding the lonely little puppy, is just too sweet! And to draw it and post it in less than a day! Truly outstanding, WP! He looks so loving and protective.... :D
Actually, considering the (role-playing) relationship between WP and Florence, it's just a li-i-i-tle bit creepy, watching him eye the young pup... :wink:
Seriously, a most wonderful job, everyone!
I don't feel quite that way, and I will explain.
Unicorns are a long-lived folk, and Florence is an ephemeral; her projected lifespan has been discussed recently, and it is all too human. It is quite natural for a unicorn to be around as one is born, grows, matures, and eventually, sadly, is not able to match the fabled near-immorality of the fabled being.
Such seems to be the story here, so far; do not count it against our trusted tetrapod that he has been around a long time.
And very similar, in fact, is "The Tale of the Adopted Daughter", from Roberty Heinlein's book "Time Enough For Love". Dora was a child when Lazarus Long came into her life; this ultimately became one of the most touching relationships I have ever encounted in the written word.
No, my friend, not "creepy"---and I know of one unicorn who decided that outliving love made life not worthwhile, so a sacrifice was made... But that is someone else's tale.
I am a sentimental sort, it seems...
Ha! I've been looking and looking and looking and this morning, I
finally found my copy of Ken Haultgreen's "The Art Of Animal Drawing"
with pictures of how to draw young colts. :D
It might have to wait a bit. (I gotta finish next week's strips) but now
the major hurdle is the nervousness generated by trying to walk onto
a stage after White Pony's artistic talent has shone! :o
Don't sell yourself short Scott. :oops:
You and White Pony are both very talented in your own ways. 8)
Just think, if everyone drew the same way, it wouldn't be very interesting would it?
*pondering*
Hmmm...
I wonder what he's up to now?
