New Front Page Design

Aloha!

Trying a bit of a new layout for the front page.
Hopefully a little more friendly and compact. :)

Is the strip physically smaller? or is that just an illusion?

The layout is a bit odd looking in Netscape:

I dunno if that's a big deal or not to you, < 5% of us g33ks use NS....

Hmm... It now has a border around it, but it's pretty much the
same size. Ordinarily I run around 575 Wide. A few shots
recently were 600 wide, as I get used to the new paper size,
but I'll bet it's the white border around it that makes it look
smaller...

Nuts... :( This is my first experiment with using tables.
Does Netscape handle tables in a different way?

I'm afraid the only thing I know about Netscape is that it doesn't
like the little scrolling "Jonny Freakinouter" at the bottom. :/

Gee, I see it doesn't handle the fun fonts I've got for the Forum
either. :(

You're pretty hot with websites, Mako. Any clues?

WWCD? (What Would Cecil Do?)

Nope, this is't any relative of Lily's  [Under The Lemon Tree] http://utlt.keenspace.com/

Aha. Still no poetry link, hmmm? ;)

It does look nice. There is an image-link busted for the "previous" button, though the "first" button is fine.

You might consider titling the lower section "News". And I don't see any content in the top banner (other than your title on the left), nor any place for the KeenStop ad box yet.

Fun with Tables

Postby ZOMBIE USER 7666 on Mon Oct 21, 2002 2:31 pm

HTML coding for Internet Explorer is far more forgiving than NetScape coding.

Where IE will forgive you for forgetting to close a table with the /table command, NetScape will have a hissey fit. Appears you've forgotten to close one or all of your tables.

Also stay away from the "P and /P" infamous paragraph commands to start new paragraphs. I use the "BR" command to cause a line break between paragraphs.

You might want to consider adding a line space "BR" command between your side bar navigation words on the left. Just a suggestion. :D

I think I've told you this before, Scott, but I'll do it again. I think you should make your strips larger and see how they come out. Like, try around 700 pixels wide. I think you'd be surprised how much of your extra detail becomes more apparent then. Especially since I know you don't draw your strip only 8 inches wide (575 pixels @ 72dpi).

Anyway, just a thought.

Hi all! Thanks for the bug spotting!

Level HeadPoetry link: Thanks for reminding me. :D

I know the poems are in the Forums, but I don't suppose you have any versions saved elsewhere, so I can just plug 'em in, do you?

White Pony
Close the tables and no paragraph marker things

Well, I checked to make sure, but as far as I can tell, the tables
have close commands put in there. I did remove all the paragraph
markers, and put in the BR command. Don't think that'll affect the
way that Netscape sees the table, but eliminating potential errors is
always a good thing.

Matt
Larger comics

Yeah, you're right. I wish I could get 'em larger. I'm just nervous
about keeping the file size down below 100K as much as possible.
I have to admit, I'm not very good at that. Keenspace will noy be
happy with me. :(

I can try saving at a lower quality JPG, but that's not going to help
the picture quality any. :( It's a tightrope kinda thing where I'm
balancing space and image quality. Still, I'll try and do better.

Hopefully, this will be helped by setting up the high res versions on
Mako's site: One thing I've been talking about with Mako is getting
some high res versions set up on a mirror site with him where he's
got lots o' storage space. Definitely need to unlazy myself to do that.
Though, I admit that that task looks a little intimidating.

Probably best to start with the current ones, and just start building
up a library of high res ones slowly, working back through the archives.

Anyway, I'll try uploading the cleaned up HTML, but I don't think it'll fix
netscape. A couple friends did offer to take a look at the source code,
though. Maybe they can figure it out.

I think it's time for a break from the HTML and pick up the pen.
There's lots to do for Wednesday. Yes, I think a drawing break
sounds nice. :)

Thanks again!

Wow!

A new site design and Monty Python, all in one day!

Is there nothing Scott can't do...

Anyway I like the new site design beacause the old one's background was too small when compared to my screen resolution.

So I partially missed out on announcements beacause of the black lines, unless I selected them, which I did.

Ciao!

Urf. I'd completely forgotten about the full-color part. (how? it's there staring me in the face!) My own strips are generally around 35k, at 8-color (b/w) gifs. I would suggest switching to png format (they do get much smaller, with almost no difference from a jpg), but you work in Photoshop, don't you? Photoshop is awful for making pngs.

If you want to send me an unreduced version of the most recent colored strip I could run it through the GIMP and see what happens.

Oh, and I like the new site design! It's quite clean!

PLENTY! But fortunately, I've got friends. :D

One who deserves particular mention at the moment
is Ricky Boone of Planetfurry http://www.planetfurry.com
Who just fixed up my HTML so that Netscape and Mozilla
should be able to handle it without problems.

Hmmm... Gotta do something nice for him. :)

Anyway, I don't have Mozilla or Netscape, so if anyone sees
something I don't, please let me know! 8)

Working good here in Mozilla 1.2beta, except for the buttons along the bottom. Any chance they could be brought towards the center and closer together?

Looks good to me!

I'm using NS 7.0, and the passing "Jonny Freakinouter!" works just fine.

Oooo, looks great in NS7 Scott:

The scrolling JF works well too, kudo's to Mr. Boone!

If your up for it, we can set up the ftp of the new strips in SuperVixen Size to my web server whenever, and once that's de-glitched, you can start w/the archives whenever...?

Tnx!

Yay! I think it's just about set.

Thanks everybody! :)

Just about set, rather than set, because the Level Head's Poetry Corner page won't come up for me. I see it's in there, and all the code seems
to be correct. Maybe Keenspace is just being flakey. I'll try again
later to be sure.

I'm getting a problem like this on my site, too. I put a new page to update (which you may have noticed doesn't link from that provacative thumbnail), but the 404 error shows up. I've tried to force the page twice, but it won't fly. Obviously a KSpace freak-out, but no doubt temporary.

Oho! You honor me, Mr. Kellogg.

But... Elasmosaurus, hmm? You didn't happen to see the History channel recently, did you? ;)

Standard description of Elasmosaurus -- "a snake threaded through the body of a turtle."

*chuckle*

Here's one:

You know, my friend, that I appreciate the big production -- but I think that this would work well as simply a "Poetry" link tucked up with the "Gallery" and "Links".

It is a form of fan art after all, just done with words as I cannot draw. And I am not the only person who has done 21st Century Fox poetry -- and I'd hate to discourage others from trying their hand at this enjoyable pastime.

If a poem is date-specific, it might have a link pointing to the right place in the archives -- and the right place in the archives could point back.

That last bit sounds useful as it would appear when the reader of archives has those events fresh in mind.
