Hotrods v2.0 Powered by Chevy ;)

Post by Mako »

Time to kick off a new thread...

From the new old forum :):

======
Busy is good

Pinion angle is critical, it is well worth the time to dial that in properly. I'd set it to -2 or -3 degrees if your going to drag race the car. That will help plant the tires as the rear rotates to a positive angle at launch.

That may result in axle hop though, so you'll have to diddle with springs, shocks and an air bag if you want to go full on racer boy with the machine. Otherwise, a good set of Bilstiens on Eibach springs will be fine for street cruisin' and bruisin'.

Cant beat a chevy...

Post by ZOMBIE USER 9843 »

Woohoo! the rear end is finished (or so sez my mech, havent looked yet), and I just had a fun time watching some raceing down at our 1/4 mile track. get this, acording to another mech who knows the guy who built my motor, all it would take to get into the 11sec area is a cam swap and some descent slicks (and enough bravery to trust the engine up to 7.5K!). Now here is another question about the rear. in the manual for it, it sez for much greater stability, to weld the mounting brackets onto the rear axle. I plan on doing a couple runs over at the drag to see how it does, my question is how MUCH added stability would welding add as opposed to just the bolts? would it be worth it to make them permanant additions to my car? hehe, air bags, does that mean I can raise and lower the side of my car? lol. final note, we found a good oil pan to replace my old POS one, the only prob is it is chrome. why the heck is chrome about half the price as non chrome? ah well. c ya!

this IS the final note! my heart swells with pride to say this, but 'twas a Chevy that won King of the Valley for the past 3 months!

I don't think you'll have to spin it that hard. Depends on your rear gears, I forgot the ratio...

If welding is an option, and the shop knows how to do it, I'd weld 'em on and gusset them for extra strength. Be careful not to put too much heat into the axle tubes at one time, they will warp.

Ha :) The airbag goes into the right rear spring to preload the suspension so the weight transfers equally to both tires.

Final Note? You mean final "car in the shop note?" perhaps? Anyways, nod chevy's rule, except for when those pesky Hemi's show up, then it's a real race ;)

BAD NEWS! the suspension was ALMOST finished (I guess I prob. mistook him and he might have said that it will be done on Friday...), and the suspension specialast at the shop had to go to the hospital for a MAJOR heart problem... so I wish him well and hope he gets better. and to top things off, the shop was robbed, they got some rims off a car sitting outside, but were unable to get in the shop itself, lucky them. good thing my chevelle was locked up! as for the gears, we went ahead and decided to figure out what EXACTLY I had in the rear, needed a lube change anyhoo. it has 3.73's with an Eaton Posi and C-clip eleminators. oh yeah, HQ pictures will be posted l8r today, I Promise!

Ouch! Oh man, that doesn't sound good.

Here's hoping your pal in the shop gets better soon. Breakin is going to unsettle the mechanics too. :( Not good.

Glad the Chevelle wasn't touched! We want pics! :)

Yep, those would be some MONDO pics :o

Grab this handy tool, I use it a LOT for my own www work:

http://www.hamrick.com/

Anyways, the interior photo is a 404, got a typo in there perhaps?

Looks like a real hotrod in progress to me :) A couple of thoughts... Replace that fender, it's not worth saving it. Ither grab a section off another car or buy a new one assuming you can dig one up. NEw sheetmetal ain't cheap though :(

Have your wrench look at the pinion seal , it looks like it's been leaking and throwing lube onto the pumpkin. If he installed all new gears, Never Mind, as a new seal is part of that doing that work.

Tnx for the pics, can't wait to see that car back on the street :)

Ok, got the interior shot fixed, will fix the sizes tonight and reupload them 2morow (assuming my connection is stable again). Figured that the fender was not worth saveing, especially considering the damage is RIGHT on the seam... heh, I have been completely unable to find a 66 NoS fender, and all the fenders I find are either off a 66 non SS El Camino (which if I understand correctly will still work, except I have to drill and mount the badge as close to the origional position as possible) or off a 67 velle/camino which wont fit at all. yeah, the pinion seal is new, but on a steep incline, is real prone to leaking... normal? oh yeah, I was wondering, do u know a good replacement radiator, as mine is the Stock replacement for a small block, and a good fan (prob. dual electric)? and I was looking into getting one of the new Mighty Demon instead of the Holley 750 Vacum, whadya think, only about an extra 50-100 bucks... well, gotta run, again, c ya!

Looks neat!

I was doing a bit of photoshop work for a holiday strip for tomorrow.

As long as I had it up and running, I just re-sized the photos and e-mailed them to you.

Happy 4th of July! :D

You might be able to scare up fiberglass fenders instead. Replace both front fenders and the hood (sell the good one for the cost of the 2 fiberglass pieces, and the hood for the cost of the new lid) and you'll trim off the better part of 100#, maybe more.

You do need to install lighter weight hood springs if you get a fiberglass hood.
yeah, the pinion seal is new, but on a steep incline, is real prone to leaking... normal?
Not normal, seals are supposed to seal, not leak ;) It's either a bad seal or the pinion is worn out where the seal rides. If that's the case, your installing new gears :-/ Fix this one my friend, it's bad beans otherwise...

[quote oh yeah, I was wondering, do u know a good replacement radiator, as mine is the Stock replacement for a small block, and a good fan (prob. dual electric)?[/quote]

Griffin and Be Cool are the usal suspects. you can get the entire deal, including fans, relay, temp sensor etc... from them. Dumping the mechanical fan is worth a good +20HP or more the rear wheels. Stunning but I've documented it.
and I was looking into getting one of the new Mighty Demon instead of the Holley 750 Vacum, whadya think, only about an extra 50-100 bucks...
Demon's are absolute crap, don't buy the advertising and don't buy the product. Get a Holley Avenger, I *promise* it'll spank serious monkey ass for about the same or less coin.
