Were those amphibious vehicles reliable? Seems to me they would tend to leak around the doors.
Schwimmwagon: No doors = No leaks.

Here's a picture:

I read where British officers would drive them at full speed
( about 45 mph ) off the docks, and back up the boat ramps
for another go. This was after the war, when they were in charge
of VW.

Now That sounds like fun! :)

I heard that a guy once drove a modified GPA "Seep" around the world,
and across the oceans. The Seep doesn't have doors either. Sounds
nutty, but he did it! I gather he had to tow his fuel supply.

LevelHead...I am in AWE. And delighted that you caught *both* interpretations. D'you mind if I print that out to keep?

marc_s--Thanks. Looks chilly but fun.

Is that one still available? I tried looking it up a few months ago, and the links wouldn't work.

You are welcome, and of course you may. It was a good couple of minutes of mental exercise, in a good cause. I'd been busy, but found myself with some time to quill. ;)

And I very much liked your simile: computers:think -> submarines:swim. You obviously are making points! ;)

If you are really serious about an amphib, how about a DUKW?

Here's one in use by the fire dept. in Reserve, LA.

And here's one for sale:

(Although technically it's a 6x6)

The DUKWs are NEAT! I gather there are some cities were you can
get a tour of the harbors in a Duck. Man they look like fun! :)

I once met a rather *strange* gentleman who owned a DUKW.

This guy owned a rather large fleet of WWII vehicles, including a
Sherman Tank which he loaned for the production of "Saving Private
Ryan".

He struck me as being... well, on the obsessive side, concerning
vehicles. We (my brother and I) asked him about the DUKW, because
they seem like such neat vehicles! Well, this guy put a lot of work into
his vehicles and they were in really good shape (as you might imagine if
he supplied vehicles to movie productions).

In his words, though, the DUKW was too much maintenance work.
10 hours of maintenance for 1 hour spent on the water. I'd much
rather have something small and workable, like an amphicar.
'Course I need a lot of money to be able to afford a luxury item
like that, but boy they look like fun! :)

The Goodies were every bit as funny as Monty Python.
All true! It's been something like 20 years since I've seen it though.

Odd note:
Before Monty Python went on the air, several members of the Monty Python cast and the cast of The Goodies were in a BBC Radio comedy show that is just as good as anything Monty Python ever turned out, called "I'm Sorry, I'll Read That Again". It's really hilarious stuff! You can find MP3s of the old show floating around the internet. I've got a good deal of it myself. :)
There's actually a Goodies reference in a Monty Python sketch. A man is giving a tour through a language school where students in various cubicles are practicing with headphones on, and as you walk by the languages go from regular ones to silly gibberish. The man pauses to correct a student's pronunciation: "No, no. Wamma Ecky THOOMP!"

My name is Angus Prunes, and this is my tune
I'm sorry I'll read that again (zzzzing SPLAT)

Odd trivial memory:

I seem to recall reading somewhere, that once upon a time, a guy actually died laughing. He died of a heart attack because he was laughing so hard at the Goodies "Ecky Thump" episode!

:o

The PBS station used to play "Blake's 7" once a week where I lived up in N. Idaho. Last time I saw it was '98, when I moved from there to here. Heck, call your local PBS station and ask. They may actually have it on the schedule.

There's two public TV stations in my area, and neither of them shows B7 any more...it's hard enough to keep Doctor Who going! One of 'em did show it for a while, some time ago, then recently showed it again--except all they did was show the first season about three times in a row. Sigh. But I hear it's coming out on DVD next year. :D I need to start saving up.
