Letters from Jenny!?

Post by Olick »

I recently came across and interesting piece of work described to me in a psychology book today. An set of 172 letters from a woman named Jenny Masterson(real woman, but may be a psuedonym). The author is Gordon W. Alport, who is best known for his Personality traits studies.

Well, anyway, the book went on to chronolog 172 letters Jenny wrote between the ages of 57 and 82(appx. ) And it depicted her as a complex, intelligent, and strong willed woman. The appeal of the book was (and I paraphrase  )
'The fascination lies in wheater or not the reader - psychologist or layman - can "explain" Jenny. Why does an intelligent woman continually act in a self-defeating way?'

So, an intelligent woman, who many times acts in a self-defeating manner, eh? Remind anyone of a Jenny we know?

Sounds like an interesting read.

And, I hate to stereotype, but it does seem to me that a lot of the most intelligent women fall into that low-self-esteem issue. Perhaps it's the sexism that still runs through society today (whether we want to acknowledge it or not).

Actually, I didn't read it, I saw a reference to it, I just remarked how a fictional and a real female with the same name seem to resemble each other, so much.

When I read about the book, I immediately though of 21 Century Fox, which isn't saying much, because I seem to think about it all the time these days... 8)

I thought the read thing was rather clear(when I wrote it  )

Interesting!

Though, fortunately for us, I think Jenny's friends are working
on dragging her out of the cycle. If all goes well, she certainly
shouldn't be acting this way when she's 57, nevermind 82! :o

Perhaps I should emphisize that this sort of thing isn't the way
Jenny normally behaves, and is a much more recent phenomenon,
since a few things in her life (Err... Scobee) started getting out of
control. Getting back to norma isn't easy.
