New Look for PortSide

Postby Matt Trepal on Mon Feb 12, 2001 2:38 am

I like the new look of the strips, Seven^3! They're much cleaner and crisper. What did you change to get them like that? Did you start using the Gimp?
Didn't you say that you had an evaluation copy of Photoshop that wouldn't let you save, so you took screen captures which you then imported to PaintShop? Or something like that?
Whatever you did, it looks good!
Now I just have to figure out why you killed off Jack....
------------------

That still seems like an awful lot of work....
But if you can do it sucessfully, and you seem to, then keep it up. However, I recommend playing around with the Gimp, because you may be able to get rid of what seems like a definite kludge.
I do my work in Photoshop, but what I've seen of the Gimp has impressed me. My home computer doesn't have enough RAM to install it, so I only have it at work and use it to compress my images (which my version of Photshop won't do to greyscale images ).
The only thing I don't like about it is that there's no dynamic text option; text only appears on one line, so filling in dialogue balloons involves adding the text line by line, not in balloon batches. The UNIX version has a patch to correct this, but the Windows version doesn't.
------------------

It's not that much work -at least not to me.
For image conversion/compession I use XN View which is quite good, but you can't see what the output will be before you save.
Text is done in MSpaint -along with adding borders and 'twinking'. It's simple and easy to use.
What's kludge?
------------------

Hey, thanks!
It's a two part thing. I've learnt of two new PhotoShop tools; colour selection and subtract selection. This makes it easier to add the text first so it anti-aliases along with the rest of the comic when I scale it back, making it look a lot better. It also means I can shade everything of the same colour at once, which is so much faster that even tho' I had to start over -twice- I still completed the comic about an hour faster than usual, then again, adding the text first helps with that too.
I haven't touched GIMP since I got it. I might play around with it tonight when I do my part of the conspiracy to see what it can do.
that's just too easy, isn't it?
It's the evaluation version of 5.0, and I do screen grabs into MSpaint, which I also use to clean up the images after I scan them, saving me a fortune in twink.

quote:
Now I just have to figure out why you killed off Jack....

All will be revealed in due course - Stay tuned.
------------------

So you're saying my philosophy of "If it doesn't fit, get a bigger hammer." doesn't always work?
Dang.
*Puts down 40lb sledgehammer and goes off to conspire with the GIMP*
------------------
