These types won't stop until the only people carrying weapons will be the criminals.
Personally I swing the other way. I say arm EVERYONE capable of handling a firearm. I shouldn't have to explain why to anyone here, because I'm fairly certain most of you feel the same way, for largely the same reasons.

Agreed.
I will feel much safer when I can take a full-auto FAL to the grocery store, and have it be NORMAL.

But that is just the thing...how many Scots walk around trying to defend themselves with a
sword?

Aye. I'm so ticked off that my state doesn't allow open carry of firearms unless you're going to like a firing range or other gun-related activity... Can't have it out just for having it, and you need a concealed weapons permit.
Am I the only one who sees the flaw with this system? An armed populace is needed to keep the government (relatively) straight, yet the government tells you when and where to carry your weapons and makes you register just to have the right that the 2nd Amendment already grants you?
Barbarians...

Oh yes, let's ban all the scary swords. What will Braveheart and the Highlanders do now?
This is so predictable. Take away guns, and people use knives and swords. Take away knives, and people use pointy sticks, clubs, sap gloves, boards with nails in them and so on. I have seen the same things happen in Britain and Australia. And yet, the gun grabbers here want us to believe they will stop at guns.
As someone who is proud of their Scottish heritage this just makes me sick. Scotland is one of the few foreign countries that I would love to visit and spend some time in, the first being Israel.

There are allready people in Brittain who want to ban large kitchen knives.

Well, if given the option of open carry or concealed carry, in today's climate, I'd never carry openly. Reason: if I'm ever someplace like, say, a bank right when a robber comes in, being visibly armed is like carrying a target sign that says "Shoot me first!" Concealed carry at least has them thinking "We'll push that skinny guy off to the side and keep an eye on him... Holy $#!) he just shot me! Where'd he get a gun from!?"
Further, some regions in some states interpret open-carry laws to mix up with the "causing a public panic/disturbance". If someone sees your gun openly on your hip, and decides to be panicked about it, the police have to arrest you... because it's always based on the OTHER person panicking, not you. Ohio used to have that set of laws.

Weapons restrictions are a slippery slope. First you ban machine guns, heavy artillery and assault rifles--because no reasonable person NEEDS an assault rifle, do they? The only types that would purchase something that dreadful MUST be planning something evil, so they're banned. Next you ban pistols and other handguns because their only reason for being is to kill other people--they're worthless for hunting, unless you're hunting down another human, so they've got to go. As for the hunting rifles and shotguns, well, who needs to hunt when you have such a plentiful bounty of produce and fresh meat and fish at the grocery store? And buying a pound of beef at the store is certainly cheaper than buying a rifle, so those are gone now too. But what's this? I don't understand. There are all these guns around in the hands of all these miscreants and such. Didn't we ban all these? They aren't supposed to have those!
If your sarcasm detector didn't peg its meter upon reading that last bit, I suggest you get it looked at.

There are some guys up in Wisconsin who took a deer with a blackpowder 1850s field howitzer. I don't think it's SMART to hunt deer with a howitzer, mind, but the militia ought to have the right to purchase light artillery, say mortars and the like.
And there's no such thing as a civilian "assault rifle". All of mine are Homeland Defense Rifles.

There isn't a lot to do in Wisconsin, is there?

I have a friend in Wisconsin, and he'd say "No bleeping bleep."
Of course, that's been edited for your perusal, but you get the idea.

Well, as I said in another thread, firearms aren't my strong suit. I'm a little-leaguer here, trying to pitch to major-leaguers. In other words, I DON'T KNOW WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT when it comes to guns. So you'll forgive a slight inaccuracy.

No, actually, you're right on target. There are handguns made for hunting, but the Pantswetter crowd doesn't think hunting is a legit sport. "OMGZ yourz shooting the animalz!" crowd. Note for possible future species: "tasty" is a trait to be decided AGAINST. So is "stupid".

Indeed. Anyone else notice how monumentally stupid a cow is? I figure I'm doing it a FAVOR by eating it. At least this way, the survival of its species is assured as it's protected by Humans.
As for hunting, I don't see what the problem is. My friend's dad loves to hunt, and his house has like buck heads up in places, and deer burgers taste nifty.
And guns... Well, I watched V for Vendetta the other day, and this line comes to mind:
"What happens when they get there?"
"What always happens when people without guns stand up to people with guns."
And I said "yeah, that's why THE PEOPLE ARE SUPPOSED TO HAVE GUNS."
...Of course, the movie never hears me, but you get my point: The People as a whole need to be armed so that armed force may never be used against them without repercussion. This is the basis of our society, the fact that the government cannot enforce tyranny upon the people without being overthrown. Counter Force with Force, checks and balances that extend BEYOND the government proper.
And now these fools just keep trying to throw it away... Well, them, and the people whose implied goal is the destruction of the United States.
Kennedy, Finstein, Murtha... I'm looking at you.

When firearms are unavailable, a sword cane is a reasonable choice for self-defense and unless you go through a security check, likely to not freak out those around you.

There really is no rational end to the anti-weapon types.
A few years ago I recall reading of a proposed ban on large, heavy beer steins in British pubs.
It seems too many people were getting knocked in the head with them.

I don't think I'll ever be anti gun. but I just can't at this time bring myself into carrying one. I'm just more of a swords and blades kind of person. sometimes when I'm just out cruising I'll bring my walking stick around with me. not the most effective in a gun fight but for how little skill I have with guns anyway at least I'd be fighting with something I'm familiar with.

The reason I prefer to carry a gun is because it is the Great Equalizer. When I am armed, I (all weakling 155lbs of me) is equal to the 280lb bodybuilding trackstar football-rushingback druggie drunken freak who wants my wallet and car keys. I am Equal.
I am not the sheep, I am the sheepdog.

And I am dirt, bloody poor and can't afford one even if I wanted one.
(which I do actually.)
