Maxgoof: That's as may be, but some households just don't have the resources. Some families really in very difficult straits.
Actually, my kids were in the Early Start program, which is state rather that federally sponsored but sometimes not clearly distinguished from Head Start. Early Start is intended for children with diagnosed developmental delays, or who are at significant risk for them. I don't know how things are done statewide, but where I live the two programs are administered together, with combined classrooms where appropriate. (As it often was for my autistic son, but not my son with CP.)

Well, actually, if it wasn't for the fact she decided to spend a year specifically raising me, and helped out in the Head Start program, then she would have been working full-time to support us both.
Head Start is optional, not manditory. I like the program, as it helped me out - and I would put my kids through it as well. Does it mean that I am absolved of any responsibilty to teach them myself? Nope. But it sure does help.
