Better sword sharpening spell

I seem to recall RHjr saying metal has to be removed for sword-sharpening. But wouldn't it be better, given lux's telekinetic power, to SHAPE the metal sharper? This would save on metal. Maybe someone thinks of it after some of that brandy?

Hmm.. That makes a lot of sense. If it's possible to shape metal using Lux Telekinesis, you could even sharpen it finer then with any metallurgical process..

...Heck, if you understand the concept of atomic structures and molecules, it might even be possible to create monomolecular edges with this..

How about something similar to what the Red Caps used on their Slicer Sticks.
Slicer sticks are nasty little things... long whippy wand with a tiny scalpel spell on the end.
Maybe instead of using lux to sharpen the blade, actually lay a "lux scalpel edge" on the blade.

Isnt that sort of what they accomplish with luxforging?

Well from what I've gathered so far, Racconan's are no closer to understanding the attom and chemical structures then we are to finding a perminant cure for canser. I belive most of what they know must have come from trile and error, and though they can distinguish between difrent elements with 'kenning' its doubtful anyone has had the reseslution required to explore such things. They must have some 'rudermemtory' laws of phisics and an apropiate 'molecular sciance' to explain the hows and whys of materials, but I don't think they've goten to the stage where they truly understand the workings of something invisible to the eye even with the most powerful of lense driven micro scopes. Have they developed a form of electron microscope Ralph?

The other consideration here might be the amount of force required to manipulate metal. Lux is a form of energy and if one wanted to utilize that energy to maintain a blade...

I know we have EDM (Electrical Discharge Machining) It can be used to make shapes / holes to very tight tolerances, and the finish is better than any grindstone can produce, but it does require a LOT of electricity. But it is also the only way to machine some hard modern alloys.

I guess one could make a lux based sword or blade sharpener, which would be nice for people like me who couldn't maintain a steady angle to save their life... =^^=

I think Lou might be on to the better idea with slicer-stick tech. But the question still is how much energy could one store within the blade to maintain a cutting edge that long?

Interesting thinking, though...

well, they do know enough about molecules to know about 'the coil of life'

possably a self shaping and self heating spell combo that can be activated occasionally so as to reshape the weapon on demand instead of constantly.

According to the explanation here, they have SOME knowledge of the atomic theory (or atomic nuclear forces), electromagnetism (meaning they are familiar with electron flow?), sound waves, and combustion. I guess they've yet to stumble onto the quantum theory.

WOW! That is some pretty advanced physics for a Medieval society, even one with magic (I just got accousted by a member of the Racconnan Society for Proper Terminology who shouted "LUX, not magic, you big hairless git!")

Whatever gave you the impression they were a medieval society?

Not quite. I once asked Ralph about that regarding use of nuclear power, and he said that the picture of the atom is coincidental, and they don't have real knowledge of the atom. They do, however, know some of the fundamentals of electricity, though they probably have no clue of its particle or wave natures.
