TOTQ Political Speculation

The major issue of the day seems to be the "lifeboat scenario" this society is in. The Mistwall keeps everybody out but the resources inside the wall are too limited to be sustainable. The expansionists want to expand the wall out until there are enough resources inside the wall to sustain their way of life, the free traders want to make the mistwall permeable so that trade can bring in resources that are otherwise lacking.

The Archivist's Guild is making a play for Freeman Downs. How do they fit into the larger picture. Are they Free Traders who want to force a softening of the walls so that Quentyn can cross, creating a precedent? Are they expansionists setting a trap for the Free Traders, looking forward to Quentyn's eventual failure? Or are they neutrals of any stripe?

This thread is for political speculation. Who's on what faction and why are the topic and it's fair game to go from macro trends to the individual membership of various characters in this faction or that.

Discuss.

I don't really think this is like that. I don't think the archivists think Quentyn will even try. I think they just want to eliminate freeman downs' representative from the council. If the council is deadlocked that could break the deadlock in their favor assuming they take the opposite position on some major issue. Right now there is no issue more major than the mist wall.

Hmm, guys you could be overanalyzing the situation. Look, you said it was a 'lifeboat scenario', right? That means land, espically usable land, is valuable because it is limited, right? Even if the limit is merely precieved, or artifical (see California zoning regs  ) then that inflates the price. Until proven otherwise I will put this situation down to opportunism and amoral greed.

The lifeboat was pretty much announced at the old guy's chess game in Sanctuary City. Land was not perceived as the problem but a lack of metal. Any limited resource situation creates a "societal lifeboat".

Actually, I don't think it's a land grab. You'll notice the primary trade in Freeman Downs is farming, not mining. It's unlikely they'd find a lot of metal under the land, even if they dug twenty miles deep. It's probably more useful as it is, a collection of farms and a few small businesses here and there.

No, I agree with the idea that it's an attack, not on Quentyn, but on the town's representative(s) so as to tip the vote on some issue in their favor. However, it's not necessarily the Archivists who hold this agenda. Someone brought up the fact that some other group with the power to do so is leaning on the Archivists. This is quite likely, as some of our own political groups have used various parts of our government to strongarm others and get results they want. It's a sneaky, dirty, underhanded tactic... and it works.

Whoever is doing this has no compassion for the townspeople. So long as their agenda is met, those pathetic masses standing in their way are no matter. The only groups who might have that power are the Free Traders and the Expansionists.

It'd be wise to go back in the comic and read up on their positions before we continue. That way we can all decide for ourselves which group is more likely to do this. But then, our individual world views might skew the results quite nicely...
