Artifact Quest Speculation

- *Quentyn became legally obligated for the contract when he told that Proxy dude that he accepted all rights and responsibilities of being Questor
giving up the title of Questor does not release him from the obligations in that contract, only death would
*As such Quentyn II will assemble his party of NPCs and go out into human lands
*He will encounter Quentyn I, retired and living well, IN HUMAN SOCIETY, off the money he swindled from the Archivists
*As such Quentyn II (our hero) will realize that:
- *Quentyn I is still the village Questor
*Quentyn I is still liable for the contract
*Quentyn II will be devastated when he realizes his hero was a two-bit con artist
*Quentyn II will blackmail Quentyn I into joining his party by threatening to go back to the Villages and let people know he's still alive
*Quentyn I will die very quickly but as his dying act will officially appoint Quentyn II his successor, making him a legitimate Questor but also leaving him on the hook for the debt

But Quentyn I didn't get any money from the Archivists. He got the land, which is now Freeman Downs. It didn't mention anything about Quentyn even being given money to buy back the artifacts. It said he was employed to retrieve the artifacts as discreetly as possible. The word retrieve is the important one, nothing is mentioned about how he does it.

[...unWARP!]
Good evening.
HOLD IT!!!!
"Discreetly"?
If everything was supposed to be kept hush by BOTH parties, and if now the Archivists HAVE BROUGHT IT TO LIGHT, didn't THEY just breach their part of the contract, and thusly, Q-1 and Q-2, and by extension, ALL of Freeman Downs are off the hook?"
¡Zacatepóngolas!
Until next time, remember:
I
AM
THE
J.A.M. (a.k.a. Numbuh i: "Just because I'm imaginary doesn't mean I don't exist")
Good evening.

Hey, that's a promising idea. They might dismiss it though. "We told Quentyn of Ridgedale to get them discreetly. We are sworn to no such secrecy!"

Besides, the discreetly applies to mucking about in the Human lands, not on the Rac'conan side of the Mistwall.
I'm still miffed at how they managed to sneak this through the courts in absentia, though. There's a case right there - the village was -not- hiding from anyone. The Archivists are up to something, and it -does- still whiff strongly of getting rid of our Quentyn. Either he effectively goes into exile, or his village (and therefore his license?) vanishes.

I just thought of something. If they wanted to get rid of the title, they would have accepted the fact that he forfeit the badge. If they get rid of the village and deport everyone, Quentyn would probably try to become the questor of wherever he moved to.
So either he isn't the only motive, or they aren't underestimating him. They know he'd be willing to cross the mistwall and that would get rid of him permanently. (But they are underestimating him there. He'll come back.

)

Okay, this is a bit off-topic but the mistwall is permiable, right? Its not like it is permanent invincible wall, shutting out any and things? You can get throught it if you want to?

Well, considering it's a wall made of
mist, I assume that, yes, you
can walk through it. I'm assuming it's purpose is mostly to conceal the Seven Villages, not physically keep anything in out out.

That makes sense. They have mist for hiding themselves and the swamps to keep people out.

Yeah, although anyone entering it without the permission of the rac-cona finds themself enshrouded in mist until they leave again. I.e. it does keep things out too.

Hmmm....
Can the archivists' guild produce a manifest of the items to be retrieved?
If not (or if unwilling) you could haul them back into court and claim they were setting up a scam, using the in-absentia trial (utterly inexcusible) and lack of cooperation with fulfillment of the contract as evidence. It might not stick, but it could tie them in red tape for a while and stall for time.

I think
this answers your question pretty clearly.

Only one human has made it through the mistwall
and back in one piece. Ennias Longscript somehow got through the mistwall without invoking the spell that shrouds travellers in mist and keeps them lost (which is how the Dire Swamp came to be known among humans as the Swamp of Mist). They still don't know how he did that, and it makes me wonder if the mistwall isn't breaking down.
Yeah, you heard me.
Breaking down. All of you who are Rac Conan may now proceed to panic.
*ignores the screaming mass of ringtails as they rush by*

Anyway...
The mistwall is essentially the first line of defense. The Dire Swamp is the second. Even Ennias might've disappeared if it hadn't been for a patrol of Rac Conans who scooped him up and brought him to Sanctuary for questioning. Despite being surrounded by surly "ringtailed folk" armed to the teeth, it was far preferable to being munched on by a mudgullet.
Probably a good thing he never met a swamp kraken, even though he was told about them and given notes.

Considering how much trouble it gave Quentyn, I'm not sure a "sissy-boy" scholar would fare much better...
