Epic is the name I go by on many area's of the internet, a male white tiger. It's my personal furry, and though I may play various characers, that one is 'me'.

I'm curious who RHJunior's personal furry is, and if we have seen them in the comics before. If so, and people know, I might be blind. If not, I am a little curious.

Really? Given the lambasting of the "I am a unicorn!" furry in said comic (during the convention story arc), I'd be surprised if he had one.

I would guess it is the difference between having a personal avatar, and having a religious conviction that an animal version of one's self is in some metaphysical way a reality.
Myself I would agree with that stance, and for me some of my avatars can be a PSYCHOLOGICAL reality, and I have no problem with that. What I mean is that there are sometimes situations in my life where enjoyment is enhanced, or the productivity/stress ratio improved if I am inwardly 'in character'. The fact that 'Draco Dei' (latin for Dragon OF God) doesn't exist except in my mind (well and as a cameo in "Oren's Monestary" ) in no way renders the internal decision to act with the decisive morality that that character is all about a foolish thing. Legends and heroes are valuible, even when they are fictional, the fact that some of them may be specific to a given individual is not a problem. Or as I like to put it: "Someone who doesn't know the difference between fantasy and reality is insane. I KNOW the difference between the two, I just don't ALWAYS consider the distinction to be one of any great importance to EVERY situation."

I hope I have clarified and drawn the discussion to a deeper level here...

There is a piece of the writer (and artist) in every character (or piece) that they create.

Agreed. A 'personal furry' or 'furry self' is very different than the conviction that one is, in fact, actually a furry. In many cases, it's simply something that accurately conveys the artist's attitude and sense of self nicely. In other words, it's projecting one's inner self into a furry form, rather than a furry form projecting into one's inner self. (whoa, deep!) It's not limited to furs, of course. You have the goth kids who think that they're actually energy vampires, wand-waving wiccans, and a host of other otherwise sane people who feel that they are fare too important and special to just be an average, normal person.

Ralph uses Ben to both put himself into the comic, and also as an easy frame of reference. He can use real-world experiences for Ben, but also can say 'Ok, Ben's just been abducted by aliens.. I know how *I* would react, therefore, that's how Ben will react'. It's a common tool for comic artists.

Myself, my personal furry form is a bobcat. Do I feel, deep inside that I am a bobcat? Do I want to become one? Do I live my life with the ideals of a bobcat? Nope. I just think they look neat, especially when wearing robin hood hats and getting the occasional friendly tummyrub.

There's a difference between having a specific furry as your favorite representation and actually thinking you're one. I myself use a wolf as my personal furry representation, but I don't go thinking I'm a wolf trapped inside a human body..

I like lions, and think they're neat...
The fact that the male lion is a lazy bugger, well... I guess we have some personality-traits in common...
(I also have rather a lot of hair, but that's another story)

Would I want to be one?
No...

And not just because of the Pride...

Know what you mean. I use a hedgehog because he is the character I created for a survivor writing contest. He lived, coming in third, and he represents me online. Kind of my way of remembering the hard work that went into that contest and all my other writings.

Jaguar, because I tend to sneak up on people.

I am not a "fursona". I just simply ADORE mongooses. Would have one as a pet if they weren't illegal in this country.

I use the name Lonewolf23k because of my first exposure to Fantasy Roleplaying: the Lone Wolf series of gamebooks.

I use a rat for no better reason than my RL job. Anyone who has to crawl through the dark and dirty space between the roof and the ceiling to run wires at our small-town TV station tends to hear a lot of quips "I thought I heard a rat up there..."

Drat, I guess I really don't have a "personal furry" per-se.

My avatar is based on my character in the "Mysteries" RP. I took the cue from Blastech and went from there.

I like foxes, buth I think they might be a bit over done, although the main characters of my two biggest stories are foxes.

My original choice for avatar was to be a skunk based on my character from a failed Space Hero campaign. I really like the idea of a skunk marksman, lethal from either end!

This Londo photoshop is probably furry enough, and then some.

I've never been a furry fan, beyond the Chuck Jones cartoons and such. Until I came here, the only furry stories, as such, that I ever read were those written by a furry fan in my writers group. I caught a link to the Under the Lemon Tree crossover on Schlock Mercenary (one of my other favorite online comics), and enjoyed that one enough to start at the beginning, and then check out the other two.

I think one of the things I like most about Questor is that the the "anthromorphic" aspect of the Rac Conans is played down, and there's more a sense of them being them selves, their own kind of creatures, rather than just humans in fur suits.

And, of course, just plain good stories, in all three comics. The other two are more straight anthromorphics, and I like them a lot, too.

My personal furry is... well, me. Only as an anthropomorphic wolf.

To be honest, furriness seems to run in the family. My mother's personal furry, "fur" instance, was a black panther. It just seems to be natural for a family that has a hard time understanding what roughly 90% of humanity is thinking on an average day...

Of course, sometimes things make more sense later. For a long time, I was certain I had to be a timber wolf, even though my mental image kept insisting on brown fur. Then I discovered the Cascade Mountain wolf, Canis lupus fuscus (literally, "brown wolf"):

(My facial fur is brown, not black; otherwise, a pretty similar wolf.)

It not only explained the brown fur, but why, the instant I stepped off the plane in Seattle, every fiber of my being suddenly sighed, "Home...".

<shrug> I consider the whole "spiritual furriness" angle to be at least quasi-religious, anyway.

Mine is a raccoon, because of the Siracs in the Cyantian Chronicles comic strips (the Rac'conans from this strip didn't hurt matters, either...)

Agreed. Good art of non-human characters should both embrace their uniquness as well as be "comfortable in thier own skin". It helps that there are supposed to be humans in this world so there is all the more reason for them to be non-human but the details are very well executed.

As for avatars, I chose mine out of practical convenience. I used to order lots of stuff my mail and would get tons of junk mail as a result. Every company I ordered from had a different fake name for me so I could see who was putting me on which mailing lists. When the internet came around, there was all sorts of fears of identity thieft so I chose a name unlike my own and of the wrong sex to throw them off. I want to raise small animals including voles as a business eventually and I was an animator at the time (with the nick name Anvile) so I started back then with Ann Vole and have never saw the need to change it. On line I found several people with my real name (including someone with my middle name too and only a couple years different in age) but there is only one living Ann Vole (a couple people had that name a few hundred years ago in England and there is an Ann Christian-Vole somewhere but it is still more unique).
