How William Shatner Changed the World

I think the group was "Think". The song was "Things get a little easier once you understand". Kept repeating that line with a father's nagging. Kid finally dies of an OD. Held to be the worst song of the rock and roll era.

Don't forget "Surfing Bird", every Eminem song, and every ranchera too.

All I can say is unless he was picking up classical or classic rock odds are it's better off lost. All other genres seem to be tanking right now. There's some nice stuff five to ten years back, but the nineties and early aughts are in that gap between period stations and new music stations. When nineties stations start appearing they'll probably stick to playing the garbage anyhow, just like most eighties stations do now. And don't get me started on country. Nobody plays country music from when country didn't suck. It's wierd. Everyone likes classic country, but nobody plays it. At least not around here.

I just feel sorry for whoever gets stuck in the fae wraith during the morning commute. There are enough bad comedians and howard stern wannabees to drive a racconan mad.

But yeah, me and Argosy thought up the crystal-extradimensional-radios thing a looooooong time ago. That darn technomage wanted to (out of continuity, of course) drop in, shake his head, fiddle with the 'dials,' amp the signal, then sit back and mellow to "Classical Gas." The Eric Clapton version, thank you. It's a tad cleaner.

Maybe, but can anyone actually ENJOY hearing him cuss out half the planet, including his mother?

The crystals don't look that big. Why wouldn't you just carry your own fairy ring with you instead of going back to the one at the College?

I can think of two very good reasons:

1. You need very specific crystals, of just the right size, shape, density, purity and number. (After all, electronics tend to need silicon with just a HINT of gallium arsenide...)

2. You need to find juuuust the right spot, or it won't work. Early radio had this problem, back before the development of amplification; you had to be in just the right position, with your aerial pointed the right way, tuned to the right station... and even then, it would only work at night. <jerks a thumb toward the sun> Ol' Sol puts out more EMF than those old sets could handle.

Now we come back to the medieval aspect of this strip.

Maybe they have stumbled onto radio: not broadcasting, but just reception. The ring crystals apparently take the signal and send it directly to the brain of the "listener".

And if they can't record the signal or replay it as-is, then maybe we can infer:

The Rac Conans have not invented a method of broadcasting radio frequencies.

The Rac Conans have not invented a method of TUNING specific radio frequencies. (Fen's description makes the ring comparable to a radio without a frequency setting and instead just moves back and forth the spectrum)

Now, they HAVE found a way of recording sound (the sales pitch of Wildcard), but with their society almost completely dependent on lux instead of electromagnetism, it just may be that radio signals and the recording method are completely incompatible.

Meaning that they don't have much use for ANYTHING that uses electricity, magnetism (I wonder what they use instead of refrigerator magnets), or both.

Until recently, with us, all of recorded sound was based on magnetism, and now it's quickly moving on to digital. HOWEVER, unless the source is digital in and of itself (i.e., a keyboard), magnetism is STILL needed to capture the sound/signal, unless someone invents a magnet-free 100% digital microphone.

If the method used to record the sales pitch (unless Merchant Max used a lux-powered voice engine) is basically a "digital" method.....(though I'm still wondering how the sound wass generated if there was no speaker: another magnet-based device)....

Perhaps then, the Rac Conans need to a technological step back and use something similar to a phonograph, i.e., a purely mechanical way of recording sound. I don't think it should be that difficult to use lux to make a tiny needle etch a microscopic groove on a cylinder or disk of...say........

Drat, they don't have vinyl and metal would make the process too expensive. Ceramic doesn't seem to be malleable enough....maybe glass?

If we can take a radio signal and hook it up to a speaker and/or audio tape and listen/record the signal, can the Rac Conans take a Færie Ring and hook it up to a recording needle?




Is that where this storyline is headed?
