What about poor Nessie? If Quentyn and Kes hook up, who's she going to be left with?

Heroes don't need loving - that's why they're heroes. To live - and die! - in heroic, suffering fashion. They are the sacrifices the rest of world puts forward. "Here, take this hero, and leave the REST of us alone, 'kay?"

It's shallow, pathetic and more than a little cowardly of us, but then, for a large chunk of humanity, that's "situation normal", don't you think?

I say he'd make a better antihero.
Both a heart and a brain are necessary for survival. Without one, the other will quickly perish.

"I decline to accept the end of man [...] Man will not only endure, but prevail...." - William Faulkner

"I can say—not as a patriotic bromide, but with full knowledge of the necessary metaphysical, epistemological, ethical, political and aesthetic roots—that the United States of America is the greatest, the noblest and, in its original founding principles, the only moral country in the history of the world." - Ayn Rand

Just a touch of rampent speculation here:
I think that the ocarina will be the final piece needed for the total download of the music. When he was in the ring before he was sleeping with a harp but now that he has an instrument which obviously means something to him his conection will be upgraded.

[...unWARP!!!]

Good evening.

Ah, here we are. My brother is right here, and he thought it was a pennywhistle (Keltic). The ocarina--he insists--originated from the Incas, though according to the site, the Mayans used it as well.

¡Zacatepóngolas!

Nah. I'm no hero. I'm the cynical bitter bastard who goes around telling people "Damn it, mayor, there IS a SHARK in the water!" or "You fools can't TRUST the Umbrella Corporation!" or "The Union Aerospace Corporation is dabbling in things Man Is Not Meant To Know!", then die in a disgusting, agonizing fashion about 30 seconds before everyone realizes he was right all along...

Hey, Alex the Dragonmaster got to hook up with a goddess, if that ain't scoring the girl of your dreams, I don't know what isn't. Also there is a lot of speculation that one of these days they're finally just gonna come out and say Link and Zelda are an item....

Oh... oh!!! Aragorn!!! the most recent axample of a hero, he gets the elf-babe of his dreams in the end....

Superman finally did marry Lois..... (and if Big Blue ain't a hero, I don't know who is)

Nothing saying a hero has to have a tradgic love life, heck, I'm all for the hero that has a love life that dosen't blow up in his face, but then again, I'm the romantic....

More or less - altho Dr. Malcom was a HELL of a lot brighter than I'll ever be. I'm a grunt, and not afraid to admit it. My sweety was the brains in this outfit. One of her co-workers once saw her attending to three different screens, half a dozen open windows, chatting on IM and taking a phone call, all at once without missing a step.

Me? I trusted her to point me in the right direction, and say "Sic 'em, Kicky."

I miss her deeply.

As for the rest of it - well, years spent in West Germany during the early 80's tended to hone your paranoia and sense of self-preservation.

Ian Malcolm was not as bright as many would like to think.

He's going to a tropical location. Hot and humid. So, why is he wearing a long sleeved black shirt and long black pants?

Because he is harkening back to old lessons in thermodynamics, where the object that best radiates heat back out into space is called a "black body". The tropics are hot, he needs to radiate heat back out, so he dresses in black. Pure logic....and completely wrong.

I thought it was because he liked black and thought it went well with anything.

I usually end up wearing gray or blue or black. I don't know why I just feel like wearing it.

and Ed, I think it's just the bitterness I disagree with, are you into anything else these days that helps with life? I was getting bitter and depressed when I discovered webcomics. I still get a little bitter and sometimes depressed but not as much anynore.

*shrugs*

I've watched people die on the Berlin wall while I was LEGALLY prevented from helping them escape or trying to save their lives.

I lost my first love to a collection of idiots who thought that forcing me into a political marriage was more important than my having fallen in love.

I watched my mother wither away from pancreatic cancer, and my second lover die of synovial cell sarcoma.

I'm cynical, bitter and misanthropic. It's that, or put a gun to my head out of despair. And I promised Aili I would not do that. One of the last promises I made to her.

No excuses, just explanations. I won't break my promise to her, and a daily dose of cynical misanthropy helps me get through the day without picking up that pistol and taking a .45 caliber pain reliever.

Heh.
Actually, if I recall the book correctly, he claims to be incapable of picking clothes in colors that don't clash; to simplify his choices, he just buys everything in monochrome. The entire contents of his wardrobe are either black, white, or gray, and it all matches.
