Gettin' old, y'all...
I was at school. My history teacher had the pevious class free so he was watching tv. When we filed in, he let us know that both towers had been hit. A few minutes later another came in and said "They hit the pentagon." He'd apparently been going room to room. Sad stuff.Doink wrote:The best I can do is September 11th. That was a horrible day for both me and my wife (then fiance). I was working in the Northern NJ area, not too far from the city. She was working in the boonies of Western Pennsylvannia. I heard on the radio that a plane went down near where she was working and she saw on TV that the towers had been hit. However, neither of us could get in touch with the other until late that night. You have no idea how relieved I was to hear her voice.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go kiss the wife.

I actually was at a movie on an Air Force base in Germany where my dad was stationed. They turned off the projector and turned up the lights and announced President Kennedy had been shot and that all military personal must return to their emergency stations and that all dependents must return to their homes. I am sure it was bad enough here in the states but for military families stationed overseas it was even more intense.Sharuuk wrote:And finally, I was in 5th period math class when this kid came running into the room saying the President had just been shot....and the memory is still as clear as if it happened this morning.Jaydub wrote:I turned a very young 54 on September 26 2005. remember you are as young as you feel.....![]()
Now if the body would just listen to me everything would be great.
How many of you remember where you were when Kennedy was shot?
And a very HAPPY, (if somewhat belated), BIRTHDAY to ya 'Wulf.....and many more to follow my friend.
Peace to all you young'uns out there.![]()

Hey, guys. Thanks for all the B-day wishes, even though it wasn't that great, and it's over now. But then, so is the six and a half hour shift I had to work on my B-day.
Yyyyyeeeeaaaaah. Let's just say I was not the right person to p*** off on the highway afterwards. If I'd had a shotgun, I would've been one idiot away from capital punishment...
Yeah, that bad.
Never ever working my birthday again. I'll quit first, or just not show up. I'd call in sick, but that'd be dishonest.
Thanks again for the birthday wishes. Hope the next one is better!

For Kennedy, I was in first grade, just after lunch.
I was watching Challenger when it took off and blew up. (And NASA's official story could not have been correct, either. A burn-through would've looked different from what I saw.)
And for 9/11 I was teaching in northern NJ. At the period change just after it happened, the kids came in and called up CNN on the computer in the back of the room. We were discussing the possibility of an accident when the second one hit. I told the kids 'We are now at war. We just need to find out who did this.' Most of them didn't really understand why I said that. The school lost a few parents and a larger number of relatives that day.

For Kennedy's assassination I was in 4th grade and the principal came over the PA system crying to make the announcement. We were all sent home early.
On 9/11 I was teaching a class on Microsoft Exchange and during the break the secretary relayed it to me.
My wife was in an Internet research class on 9/11 and the instructor told them all to go to a certain news site where the saw what happened - it took the instructor 15 minutes to figure out why her class was suddenly dumbfounded - she hadn't turned around to look at her own screen.

When the Challenger exploded, I was in high school, on my way to my science class... several kids stopped me with the announcement "the shuttle exploded!" Being the usual butt of retarded teenage jokes, my response was "yeah, right--" Till I got to class. The teacher said nothing: he just turned on the TV set sitting on the top shelf above his desk. We spent that period watching the news reports.
On 9-11, I was making a deposit at the local bank. The workers were talking-- "did you hear? Someone flew a plane into a skyscraper in New York!"
The shock and horror and anger came later. But you know what my first thought was? "I <I>wondered</i> when those hijacking jerks were going to think of doing that..."

on 9-11 I was with my mom in a local Meijers and the security TV's that usually showed images of the parking lot that were located where everyone could see them were instead turned to the two towers.
my first thoughts were "we are going to war," it didn't matter weather I would later support or condemn the war but I just knew we were going to be in one. I mean they were kinda asking for it just a little.

I still say the doctor did it....
On 9-11 I had gotten up and got on my computer and saw on the Drudge Report that the tower had been hit. At first I thought it must have been a small plane but when I went out and turned the TV on I realized it as a jet. I woke my wife up and let her know what had happened and as we watch TV the second tower was hit. Up until then I first thought it was an accident but after the second plane hit I knew it was an attack.

I was in a sixth grade class math class when Kennedy was killed. In 1986, I had just finished installing a CRT in a TV I was working on when I saw the Challenger explode. (my parents were living in the Tampa area at the time and saw it happen from their front yard) On 9/11 I was working in a warehouse in Tampa when I heard it over the radio.Jaydub wrote:On 9-11 I had gotten up and got on my computer and saw on the Drudge Report that the tower had been hit. My part
I wasn't born yet when Kennedy died... sorry, folks...
When the Challenger blew I was in high school. I felt a sudden depression, but didn't know anything had happened to the shuttle until I got to choir class, where the choir director had turned on a TV. By the end of the day, other kids were already making the now-familiar jokes, such as:
"Did you know Krista MacAuliffe had blue eyes? Yeah, one 'blue' east and one 'blue' west."
I still don't think it's funny...
For 9/11, I was working as an electrician's apprentice in an apartment complex when my journeyman, Chris, turned on the radio. By that point, the news about the Pentagon crash was already getting on the air; Chris didn't understand how the plane could get by the radar. My hypothesis on the subject was proven right when news of the plane "snapping off light poles" as it went past was mentioned.
I promptly went downstairs and called my mother; she worked for the IRS.
Seems she'd felt like staying home that day. <whew> Of course, nothing ever happened to the Earl Cabell Federal Building in Dallas, Texas, but it was still a relief.
Yours truly,
The remembering,
Wanderer

Good evening.
1981: Reagan and the pope shot. I was in 4th grade, first year in an American school. I didn't speak very good English back then and wasn't sure what was going on. The principal came on the PA system and announced what happened. Typical of Catholics, we all stood up and said a prayer (still don't remember what it was), and went back to work.
November 1984: San Juanico disaster (2 oil tanks exploded in Mexico City, not the backyard type, mind you). I was at home because my high school books hadn't arrived yet (odd curriculum), and saw it on the Mexican news.
January 1985: High school, the principal interrupted math class, "Y'all want to knewe, that thu space shuttle---blewe uhp..." She was from Texas.
9/11: Unemployed, was at home, and I turned on the news. I saw the first tower and assumed it was just a very large fire but didn't know what had caused it until several minutes later. I saw the second plane crash and later I saw both towers fall. I still remember anchorman Pablo Latapí "The Twin Towers no longer exist..." I had a friend (from another forum) that worked right in front of the WTC and had experienced the first attack in 1983...well, you can see our reactions here: http://www.geocities.com/TelevisionCity ... tragic.txt
Andy died 2 years later, from a sudden lung disease. He was caught in the dust cloud, but he didn't seem to have succumbed from that.
Columbia: We were in church all day long (Children's conference) and my dad was taking us home. He mentioned that the Columbia had crashed. I thought he was getting mixed up with the Challenger memorial. I got home and there were no news shows on.
Then, I got on line.
And we saw the videos.
Me and my dad almost cried right there.

Sheesh.
Looks like my thread got hijacked by memories. Guess I might as well add my two cents.
Kennedy... yeah, not alive yet.
Wasn't even in the womb.
Challenger... well, I might've been alive, but I've no memory of the event save what was in my textbooks in school. Very sad.
9/11... was in one of my classes my senior year, not sure which. Heard something about a plane hitting the towers. They had the news on in the library, so I went and watched it.
I asked what happened. Someone said hijackers had flown jet planes into the buildings.
And for some reason, I thought they meant fighter jets. My brain is a little weird like that. I remember thinking they were cowards for committing suicide and not staying around to fight...
As it is, I'm glad the fourth flight was stopped. We lost enough people that day to evil men. My only consolation is that we have severely crippled the ones who planned the attacks, and sent them running.
Don't care if you're alive, bin Laden, you'll change your name to "bin Killed" soon enough...

I remember posting a satirical drawing to yerf about 2-3 days later. I was venting my spleen at the time: it was a political cartoon, showed a chicken in an arab headdress, wearing a bomb-belt and squatting on a toilet.
Caption: "Chickensh*ts."
It was pulled the same day by the admins on "hatemongering" grounds.... and was greeted with some by cries of "bigot" and "you have no proof"....
Not two days. TWO DAYS. And the mealy-mouthed snivellers were back at work.

Ahh, the fall of the Berlin wall. I remember that, the end of the occupation of Germany after WWII. Only took 40 years, aint it great when things are done by committee?
I remember the Reagan years fondly, all the whiny protest songs that we were going to heck in a handbasket and we might as well convert to communism now and be done with it. They never realized the big three were winning the cold war for us bloodlessly, John Paul, Reagan, and Thatcher.
The big thing I remember is the Solidarity movement and the fall of communism in Poland, as part of my ethnic hertiage hails from that land. I was happy to see something positive happen to the old country for a change.
Bewteen the collapse of the Soviet Union and the formation of the EU it was amazing to see the map of Europe transformed nearly overnight.
When I first heard about a plane hitting the WTC I was coming into the library. The shop teacher mentioned it to me. At first I thought it was a light plane. I remember thinking to myself: "I hope this isn't some jackaXX trying to make a political statement!" Then I found out that these were jetliners and about the four attacks. I think every TV in the high school was turned into the same thing. There were a lot of subdued conversations that day...
Two months later I got my marching orders to guard a local nuclear facility, just in time for my annual bout with influenza. Hee, hee, I love the national guard!
