How many open threads are there in the story?

"Bumbling hero" is good at first, but if he doesn't learn then he finally ends up just looking stupid. Next major arc might be a little thing that leads to something big, like the Expansionist Conspiracy or Whatshisname's (Rosen?) laboratory. On the other hand, there can't be TOO many big conspiracies going on, or the Rac Connan Daimh are gonna start looking like the Illuminnati. Perhaps a connection between the two (although that would be a bit strange)? Anyway, Ralph has at least two rope-sized threads dangling.
I thought I'd pull this out into an open thread to see how much story material RHJ has given us teasers about.

Here's my count:
1. Fen's fairy ring obsession
2. Rosad's disciples
3. Why did the dwarves stop trading with us
4. Expansionist follies
5. A budding romance:
5a. Meribeth?
5b. Nessie?
6. Linnaeus

Considering how long it takes to resolve even one arc, there's material here to the end of the decade. So, did I miss anything?

Here is the start of "part II" where Linnaeus tells of his meeting with Quinten and subsequent mission to teach the Gragum of God. (very touching stuff)

I wish I had half his faith.

I suppose that's where I part company with RH and some other people here. I don't believe. I don't think I can believe any more.

Wish I could. The world would be a brighter place for me if I could.

#3 seems more like and unanswered question than a story arc. Or just backhistory like the Plague.

Of course I would like to know how Nessie and Boggy are doing, but I would also like to see Rahans father and see if hes anything like his son.

It could be the expansionists who caused the dwarves to stop trading, in hopes that the lack of metal would force the issue...

Well, faith isn't rational, in the end. I'd have a care, though. An awful lot of people cluck at religious faith but live their lives by less well thought out faiths that fall pretty easily when they're actually examined. If all you're replacing religious faith with is some other god (I hear money's really popular these days), it isn't your capacity to believe that's a barrier.

I don't know, it seems like "get the dwarves to trade with us again" would be an obvious quest. I can even see Rahan's dad sending our hero on that one.

It's more than I can't trust anyone or anything these days. I've lost too many friends and family over the years. And somewhere along the way, I turned into a cynical old bastard without noticing it.

Wonder where I went wrong...

I would not expect the story of Linnaeus to be continued any time soon. At the end of Meanwhile II it is a year after his meeting with Quentyn. A year has not yet passed in the storyline (although I think its getting close) so Linneaus has not yet even left to go to the Gragum.

Linnaeus is not really going on faith, per se. His belief in God is based on the experiences of others, that he cannot deny. He also knows how much God has guided his own life.

So, when he hears a cry from the wilderness for God....he has no choice but to answer it. It is, after all, his job.

The theological problem of why do bad things happen (especially to good people) is one of the hardest ones out there. It (the problem) apparently is called theodicy.

I'm not a Methodist but Rev. Sensing has a good take that might give you some guidance. He's former military (artillery) as, I believe, you are too so you might have some common cultural points.
