Young Elders

Looking at the council, it just struck me that there seems to be something odd going on here. At least two "elders" have no grey in their fur in both group panels. Now Gilder does get shown with a little grey here but usually he's drawn, it seems to me, much younger than most of his fellow elders. Is this normal? Is Gilder fresh on the Council and thus perhaps from a different generation with a different outlook? Is the color of their fur significant to the story?

Its been discussed only recently i think (cant remember the thread ^^;)

Basically,a plague affected the Rac Conan lands recently killing off alot of the very young and the very old. As a result the "council of elders" for freeman downs is mostly made up of people who are really only late middle-aged.

Heh pretty much spot on, not to worry, we will have a bunch of old codgers in the council in a few more decades.

And hopefully, after their run-in with Quentyn, they will be a bit less heavy-handed and arrogant.

I wasn't going on about the young age of all the elders but the apparant age differential between the most grey and least grey of the Council. The variance seems to my eyes to be very wide. I smell that there's a reason for that and that we'll be informed of it in due course.

Ummm... that -is- the reason. Note that it said -many- of the youngsters and elders, not -all-. A small place like Freeman's Downs may have only two or three of the normal age for Elders left, and the rest filled in with younger than normal participants.

It seems that what we have is something of an abnormal Council is all I'm getting at. The Council was probably not conceived to have a cross-section of ages so wide apart. It was meant as a boat-anchor to slow down reckless youth. But isn't the letter that Quentyn got the very picture of reckless youth?

It's beginning to sound like a different universe. "I am grey. I stand between the candle and the star. . ."

It's Quentyn of Ridgedale. I'd say yes.
