Maybe yes, maybe no. It could be a letter reasuring the councel that the newspapers are only printing half the story (Thus saving Quentyn's Questorship), as well as informing them that they would like to requisition him for a mission (Thus introducing the "Much Worse" aspect).
mmm, my money's on Mulharney. He doesn't seem to have a problem using Quentyn to his own ends. This is of course betting that the letter is a summons for Quentyn to do a job.
Heheh, I'm now going to try my hand at some advanced deductive thinking and see if I can predict what's about to happen! *assumes a Sherlock Holmes pose; at least he would if he had a pipe or a violin*
I'm going to say that the letter is going to be Mulharney saying that Quentyn was working on behalf of the City Guard to try and break up the street gang that was performing all the robberies, and that the charges against him were trumped up to enable him to work under cover. It's also going to request that Quentyn return to the city to help Mulharney catch the counterfeiter.

Mike Fang, There is one problem with part of your deductive reasoning. I think you may be correct on Hulharney writing that Quentyn was working on behalf of the City Guard to try and break up the street gang but If he wanted to hire Quentyn, wouldn't that letter go to Quentyn? After all isn't Quentyn an independent contractor?

True. Okay, this is now just speculation, but maybe the letter IS for Quentyn but since he was in the middle of a meeting, it had to be given to the arbitrator first. There's also the possibility that Mulharney anticipated Quentyn would catch it from his town council when he got back home, so he decided to send word to the council directly.
There are two things that define a man: What God gives him, and what he does with that.
But if the letter was for Quentyn, meeting or not, why would the arbitrator open and read it? It did have an "official" seal on it. I'm in agreement with you on the speculation it's from either the adjudicator, Mulharney or both <hopefully> explaining Quentyn's "undercover" work for the City Guards and trumped-up charges leveled for street cred......as Mulharney stated.....as for catching the counterfeiter(s), I think Mulharney already knows who it is and has quietly confronted them about it. Since the molds and casts have been destroyed, there's no evidence, but as Mulharney said as he left the room "now we know who to watch".

Remember. It is perfectly normal and legal for a Questor to be freelance. It is the title of "Questor <I>of Freeman Downs</i>" that is in peril. They could strip him of that title--- and as Lady Rose pointed out, that requires Quentyn have done something far, far more grievous than the charges he was pressed with (something on the order of murder or treason.)
If they did strip him of his title he could still practice his trade... but he would no longer have the official title (for all the good it's done him thus far.)

I doubt the letter is written to help Quentyn defend against the charges he's facing. If that was the case, they would have given him a document to bring with him. Or at least talked to the local abjudicator using that globe-thingy, so that it could have been sorted out.
The letter is most likely an invitation to go from a hot place and into the frying-pan...

I'd say how could it be worse than what he just went through, but you know how that goes...
The elders do not look ready to let him go even if the letter tells the other side. They've been looking for an exuse to say there shouldn't be a Questor, and now they have one.

They can say there shouldn't be a Questor all they want. The fact of the matter is that by bothtradition and law, unless I'm mistaken, Quentyn was made Questor of Freeman Down because no-one challenged him for the title, and the village elders didn't want to give him a test because he was the only one.
Furthermore, IF Gilder tries to push for a stripping of his title based purely on his dislike, (or could it possibly be fear) of Quentyn, and these flimsy and totally sensationalized scripts, he's gonna have one helluva fight coming from Lady Rose. She doesn't like his attitude and is a difinite traditionalist and supporter of "the old ways". Gilder is only concerned with his image and pretty much nothing else. I almost wish Master Rillcreek hadn't stopped him and that Quentyn had laid him out cold.

The Elders have been looking for an excuse? Nope. Rillcreek, the Guard captain, and Lady Rose all like him. It's Gilder that hates his guts. We don't know about the rest, though it seems obvious that Gilder has at least one or two allies, but I don't think there's a solid majority -against- him.
Well, if you think about it, this is very much like our current media today. You know "If it bleeds it leads".
The bigtown papers (let's call them "The Usual suspects") are reporting everything that goes wrong (in their eyes) and nothing of what is going right. You then have the sheeple believing everything the "The Usual Suspects" report and react with doom and gloom. The Tea Rags (let's call them Fox News, Talk Radio and Blog sites) report both the good and the bad about what has happened and an informed citizenry then can weigh the information and make an informed decision on the issues of the day. We are only looking at one side here so far and I think the letter will tell them "The rest of the story"

Oh, clearly there isn't. The look of amusement on Rillcreek's face says that much.
If the laws regarding Questors is similar in all the villages, which I suspect it is, this letter could be an official communique to the Council of Elders of Freeman Downs to indicate that the Questor of Freeman Downs has not been charged with any crime whatsoever, and any action taken against him would have to be based on something else.
Which leaves them with nothing.

Max...I think Quentyn was actually charged with his infractions, but even though fines were paid, the charges have all pretty much been dropped as far as the melee and subsequent events at the hideout. At least that's how I've interpreted the last of the events.....I could very well be wrong, but that was the impression I got.

All fines and dues have been paid, the last set by Meribeth as far as I know. Sure, he thanked her for paying his bail, but "bail" here means "money I owe for committing a crime", not "money to get me out of here until my trial date". No doubt the charges are still on his record, but as far as anyone in the Gaurd is concerned, he has paid his "debt to society" and is free to go.
And I bet the papers didn't mention the fact that the public nudity charges were dropped along with several others since the adjucator thought the poor lad had paid for them quite enough through his own embarassment...
I'm lost. I've gone to find myself. If I should return before I get back, please ask me to wait. Thanks.
Okay, you guys aren't going to believe this, but I actually had a dream about this last night!! My third TOTQ dream!! (or second, I've got to search through the forums to see).
Basically, I was in Freeman Downs, nighttime, and I believe Quentyn was with me. He handed to me that letter and said, "I'm glad these guys don't know what a [sea coral?] is!" I wondered what he was talking about, and saw the "stamp" that the letter had, and it was indeed some type of coral (or other similar marine lifeform). I didn't think too much about it until one of the elders said something like, "All charges against Quentyn are dropped/absolved, he was working undercover", or a similar phrase used in this thread. Again, I didn't think too much about it until I shuffled the letter a bit and looked at the "stamp" from another angle. Now, it WAS a stamp, it had the price and legend "coral" (or something like it) but when I looked at it rotating it 135 degrees clockwise, I saw that the "coral" formation was actually a doctor-handwritten note that just barely said what the elder said! It really took some effort to read the note and see that, yes, all those squiggly lines were indeed handwritten script. There was a signature there but I couldn't make out what it was.
Anyone else ever dream about TOTQ?

Last night I had a furry dream about a "foxoid" and a virus that afflicted him with perfect memory, so he suffers from the pain of a severe injury he had once had every time he thinks of it (and he can't help thinking of it...spend a whole day NOT thinking of a green elephant, as he put it).
