Is this a trend?

Post by Maxgoof »

Quentyn's first Quest: Rescue the chieftain's daughter. Challenged the authority of the local village chief's wife, the captain of the guard, and others, albeit unwittingly.

Quentyn's second Quest: Help Colin overcome his night terrors. Challenged the authority of Colin's parents, grandparents, doctors, and the capital city council, albeit unwittingly.

Quentyn's third Quest: Get his sword back. Challenged the authority of the local constabulary and apparently much more, albeit unwittingly.

I sense a pattern here.

Yep but it started even before that!

Quentyn's quest to become a Questor he had to Challenge the authority of the Elders at the Sooth Stone, the assembly of Elders of Freedom Downs, his mother and the whole concept of there being Questors in his time before he was granted Questor.

Good point! He always seems to be facing down established authority, and, while never directly contradicting it (well, except for the doctor), comes at them from an unexpected direction, thus forcing them to make decisions they don't like.

Oh, I imagine part of being in authority is having to change one's mind occasionally, when circumstances seem to require it, and take the blame for whatever happens next.

Heh. The Democrats have the first part down pat, except for the 'occasionally' part. The taking responsibility bit they need to work on just a tad.

We've been told we should question authority, and as citizens of a free society, the Rac Cona Daimh have proper times and methods available for doing that. Quentyn seems to be doing that reasonably well, within ...errr... locally set limits.

That's why it's better to have a government that leads people, rather than one which rules subjects. Have you seen what happens when the authority being questioned happens to be of the "Liberal" persuasion? You might as well insult the "Godfather". Much better for one's health to question "Conservatives", they've got that whole "rule of law" thing going.

You would have loved being at some of the County Commissions "public hearings" on gun control issues where I spoke........on more than one occasion I called specific commissioners "bare faced liars" in public and on live mic and camera.......and could prove it beyond ANY doubt.

And you should have seen their faces when I produced, of all things their voting records to prove the point. :o :x .....in that order.

And YES.....I LOVED doing it.

I can't believe I used to be one of them!

Wow, it only took six posts to get a liberal joke into a nonpolitical thread! Is that some sort of record?

Now, now... this thread was political from the get-go. Politics of the Seven Villages, perhaps, but political none-the-less.

Isn't it amazing what happens when you start thinking analytically and with genuine logic instead of being totally driven by emotion?

Slight tangent: One trend I noticed was that Quentyn keeps getting involved into situations which seem rather easy at first, but hide a deeper, darker threat underneath.

#1: the missing chieftain's daughter. At first only a missing person case, but is soon revealed to be an act of terrorism by a Gragum shaman and his followers.

#2: Colin Millfolk's Night Terrors. What was believed to be nothing more then a child's mental problems, turn out to be caused by an old, dark threat lurking underneath the very city itself.

#3: As it turns out, the gang problems Quentyn had are in fact the symptoms of a bigger problem, involving a conspiracy of merchants employing the services of gangs to further their agenda..

One thing I've noticed, and really liked, has been that when Quentyn (or that reporter guy) has information that the government really, really wants to keep hidden, they try persuasion. They don't try threats. The most they say is that they will deny it in public, damaging Quentyn's credibility. (At least until the public decides Quentyn is more credible...)

There's never the slightest hint of that favorite of conspiracy-mongers, "Toe the party line or you will be disappeared," or "The kid knows too much. Neutralize that threat." It never seems to cross anyone's mind that the government might consider something like that.

As opposed to the Republican tendency to ascribe absolutely everything that goes wrong to the long-term fallout from the most recent Democrat administration? ;)

Politicians in general have difficulty with the concept of responsibility - nobody really has a monopoly on ducking the blame.
