Your birthday? Happy Birthday man. Wow, what a date to have that'll live in infamy with you your whole life.

And both my grandpas fought in WWII. One in the pacific, the other in Europe. Their stories live vividly in me after hearing them.

Happy B-day, Sol.

My grandfather, like a lot of people's grandfathers (at least people my age) served in WWII. He didn't enlist until late in the war, but he still served (he didn't enlist until May of 1945, when he turned 18). I have a great deal of respect and admiration for that man, and not just because of that.

One grandfather was in the Navy, pre-Dec 7, 1941. Was pissed when his ship went out with Halsey to deliver some planes to Wake. He was about due to get out, and that trip meant he wouldn't be able to get home by Christmas.

He missed the attack by about eight hours (Halsey's return was scheduled about the time of the first strike) due to a storm slowing the taskforce down. What few stories he did tell where not the stuff of John Wayne WWII films. Though watching the movie Midway was interesting cause he was at the actual battle (on a DE with the Yorktown)

My other grandfather kept getting defered, the draft board felt he was more valuable stateside as an engineer keeping the tanks rolling off the line than in either Europe or the Pacific with a rifle.

A Happy birthday to you, Solidus!

...both my grandpas were in the navy WWII... fortunatly the one that was out to sea at that time was on a ship that was late coming to Pearl Harbor. I do forget the name of the ship... I should ask me mother again.

*cough-wheeze* Since everyone in my area is coming down with a bad cold, what reason is there for me to be left out...

[...unWARP!]

Good evening.

....a moment of silence......

And feliz cumpleanos, Solidus!!

I once had a student whose birthday was 9-11...

Being Mexicans, I don't think that either of my grandfathers were in any of the front lines of WWII (we did send troops after Hitler sank a few of our boats), but I did have a great-great grandfather who was part of Benito Juarez's personal guard.

My dad tells me that when he was around 25 he was told to go to the Selective Service office and have his card re-sealed.

"You're not sending me to Vietnam, are you?" he asked the clerk.
"Let's hope not."

Yup. Mexico (and most of Latin America) was considering fighting against the Viet Cong commies.

Actually, Mexico has indirectly fought in the recent wars. One third (or less, not quite sure) of the U.S. Armed Forces are Hispanic. During the first Gulf War, a Mexican news show aired a list of American casualties, some 20 names.

ALL OF THEM were Hispanic! They even interviewed a nurse who was stationed with American troops in a camp near the Saudi-Iraqi border and she was from Monterrey.

No, not from California. Monterrey, Nuevo Leon.

?Zacatep?ngolas!

Until next time, remember:

Good evening.

A good day to pay one's respects to all of our soldiers who fought in that war. There are not many left now, and too many of the current crop of teens don't even know what they did.

As for the birthday? Somehow it doesn't surprise me in the least...

Thanks - I'll pass this off to my dad - he fought in WWII and Korea.

Congratulations Sol. I'd give you some birthday balloons, but suspect you would most likely be huffing helium and making crank calls with them.

Birthday boy, er, raccoon

Happy birthday, Solidus :D
I was gonna get you a shiny, but it got, ah, misplaced. :o
Uh, yah, that's it. Misplaced.
As for WWII, my dad served in the seabees in the south pacific.
(my grandparents were apparently opposed to anything that would get their little boys hands dirty, so I think volunteering for that branch was something of an act of rebellion)
I served on a sub in the north atlantic back in eighties and, technically, can claim to be a VFW.
I was on patrol when Panama formally declared war on the United States.
Note I said technically. I may be squirrelly, but I aint squirrelly enough to try and claim I am on equal footing with the men and women who actually put their lives on the line for our country.
