Field Expedient Weapons

Post by Labrusca »

Odd, I thought S'aaruk and Solidus would have expounded mightily on this topic. Weaving chest hair to make rope for snares, that sort of thing.

FYI...I've been swamped in work for the last week and a half (shortest work day 14hrs) and thus had little if any time to "expound mightily" on weaving my chest hair into ropes etc......besides...I use the hair from my mane....it's much longer and stronger....so there....nya :P

Now that things have calmed down a touch, I'll see what I could come up with........I think a catch phrase of Popeye's is appropriate for Quentyn at this time....to wit..... "That's all I can stands, I can't stands no more!"

I think Quenty's about to open a big ol' can o' "Whoop-a$$" and he's gonna follow the directions to the letter. Time to start dishin' out a little of what he's been takin'.

Improvised weaponry.

Let's face it folks, when you're as desperate as he is, just about anything within arm's reach is a weapon. Seems to me he's making himself a bonking stick in that last panel (forget what it's actually called, and I'm too lazy/tired to look, so for now we'll call it a bonking stick). Not sure what the copper and rock salt is going to do--I slept through chemistry--but I bet it'll be interesting. I also see...are those fish-poppers? (What is Ralph's fixation with fishing via explosives anyhoo? We haven't seen anyone in Goblin Hollow fish with TNT yet, but I suspect it's mostly because Ben lives in the 'burbs. We KNOW he has ready access to explosives...)

Is that only via Gunther, or does he have a fully material source as well?

The army survival guide has an entire section on "field expedient weapons"--- which in their case refers to things like flint knives and stone axes. Considering your average gangster could make "field expedient" steel shivs and zip guns (generally single-shot firearms, made from pipe), the army approach seemed... limited.

I like to keep all my secrets close to my heart, can't let you know everything up my sleeve
Yes, sir. I agree completely. It takes a well-balanced individual... such as yourself to rule the world. No, sir. No one knows that you were the third one... Solidus. ...What should I do about the woman? Yes sir. I'll keep her under surveillance. Yes. Thank you. Good-bye...... Mr. President.

The idea is that if they're in a civilized setting, they'll just liberate the enemy's weapons rather than waste time on making shivs and zip-guns.

If they're -really- cut off, they can still make something from rocks and branches.

One things that always bugs me in movies and TV is when the goods guys are running from baddies, and they somehow manage to take a bunch down.....they their weapons there! ARRRGHH!! They wouldn't do that! They would take them and use them. I love when TV shows do have the heros scavange (coldn't think of a better word) for supplies from defeated enemies.

Thanks Moonie.....you said it......THAT was one of the most aggrevating and idiotic points in the old "V" series. Marc Singer and his resistance fighters would waste a bunch of the lizards, firefight OVER, no more baddies......and they'd haul a$$ outta there LEAVING ALL THE ALIEN WEAPONS BEHIND!!!! AAAAARRRRRUUUUGGGGHHHH :x :x :x

In one skrimish, they waste the baddies and left a perfectly functional 4x4 vehicle mounted with the alien energy beam equivalent of a Browning .50 cal heavy machinegun.....they didn't even TRY to either take it with them or destroy it............ :x :x :x GRRRRRRRRRRRR

And all the while they'd be bitching about how OUR firepower was almost always outclassed by the aliens' body armor unless "special" teflon coated "armor-piercing" ammo was used.

Tactical and stratigic stupidity drives me up the walls pretty much more than anything else. It truely drives me to want to go out to Hollywierd, find the writers and stomp 'em into a grease spot if I couldn't slap some of the stupid outta them.

Whooooof......sorry for the rant......MadMoonie just touched on a subject that has angered and frustrated me with "heros" and action TV and movies for a loooooooooooooooooog time.

I remember some short story from a zillion years ago where the hero kept kicking the aliens in their "tentacle pits". When asked why he said it was because that was where their reproductive organs were and it was a vulnerable spot. :o
Know your enemy and wear steel toed shoes. :D
But Quentyn already knows this.

No, dude. Tell us how you really feel. :D Actually that might be something better suited for a ten mile radius.

The store he used to work at (which I'm assuming is still nearby) sells gunpowder.
