The Music Cona Daimh

Post by Yuoofox »

Here are a few of questions:

What is Racconan music like? I imagine it would be Celtic sounding, but I wouldn't be surprised if there were a little Bluegrass thrown in. ;-)

Do they have any lux synthesizer instruments? For instance, the electric guitar looks like an acoustic guitar on the outside, but it's really a synthesizer.

Does anyone here on the forum play an instrument? I play the trombone, the piano, and the recorder.

Keyboards here....have a triple stack of Korg and Novation KB/synths. Been working on a song for Quentyn for some time now. Wayfarer sent me some really exceptional lyrics that tell Qyentyn's story beautifully. I've written some music with a medieval/Celtic sound to it, but getting my vocalist's and my days off to coincide for a good recording session has been nearly impossible.

Once we get the vocal tracks laid down and I've mixed it, the plan is to submit it to RH for approval and if he does, he'll put it up with a link so it can be heard and d/l'd.

I play improvisational violin (translated: the results of my trying to play from a piece of written music are dreadful, but if I'm listening to someone else, I can play a harmony line that fits.)

I remember "learning" the recorder in elementary school. I still have mine somewhere. From time to time I have picked it up and played with it a bit, but I can't really do much with it.

I have an ocarina that I tried to mess with, but never really had time to be serious with.

To quote a very tired cliche, I can't carry a tune in a bucket. Or an instrument, for that matter. But I must say that I am very much looking forward to this song of yours. Please give us the headsup when it is ready.

The funny part (or sad part - I'm not sure which) is that I'm so used to saying I play by ear that I didn't even get that it was a joke at first. :P

Now don' be knockin' playin' by ear.. ..and I get your "fennec joke".....but I've been playin' for over 40 years, have never had formal lessons and cannot read note one of sheet music. However, if I hear something and it catches my attention, I can usually figure it out in about an hour or so.

The hardest thing I've ever learned to play on the piano/keyboards was Mason Williams "Classical Gas".

That's all right M'Lady.....On many occasions when I say that I play the keyboards by ear, the usual "intellectual humor" come back is: "Wouldn't it be easier to use your fingers?" or "Very good....but don't you get a headache afterwhile?"

Awwww. :P at them.
I've never had anyone tease about playing by ear as though it were a bad thing.
Besides, if it works, how are they going to know the difference? :D

Actually, the best come-back was at a performance.....an open mic night at this little club here in downtown Orlando. I got that same line from a couple of "intellectuals" and just smiled......then I rocked the house when my turn on stage came. Everyone was blown away by what they heard come out of only 3 keyboards and one musician.....they actually couldn't believe they weren't hearing the insturments they were hearing but a set of high-end keyboards.

Afterwards, I went back to the "intellectuals" who were a little slack-jawed at what they'd just seen/heard, downed an excellent Cuba Libre and said: "Entirely by ear.....can't read a note." That was my :P to them. :D

Oh, I'm not, I'm not. I was making a double joke. I really do play by ear, meaning that I can hear a tune on the radio or on CD a few times then play it out on the piano. But then as a second thought, I added the part about a Fennec fox "playing by ear."

Oh, Wayfarer, I like the song that you have as your signiture. The version that I heard was when Rich Mullins was singing it acapella, accompanied by a group (perhaps Jars of Clay).

Rich Mullins is my favorite Christian musician, and he's a bit of a personal hero.

Oh, thanks! :D
I love the song "If I Stand." I actually heard it first on the radio and didn't know the title or artist - I had to do a google search of the lyrics to find it. (But I do that anyway... I like to collect song lyrics I like from the radio. :) )
I didn't know that Rick Mullins had done a version of it; I'm not very familiar with his work. I do like Jars of Clay a lot, though, and was rather excited to find the song connected to them (though I don't have it and can't seem to find what album it would be on... :-? ).

And as an added bonus, the lyrics go rather well with a Wayfarer theme. :D

Hrrmm... most I could ever do was the fundamentals of a viola and a clarinet in sixth grade band. Neither really took off.

I play by ear but I also compose on the fly. I can improvise on a tune for hours and never play it the same way twice. Useful for playing background diner muzzak but I can't play for other people to sing to very well because the people get confused by the extra notes. If I could afford keyboards and midi boards for the computer, I would be making movie music (still could happen soon)

I played the piano a bit when I was much younger, but I haven't picked it up in almost two decades. Didn't have much ability and kinda gave up.

I'd still like to learn to play something, but I don't have the money for equipment or lessons. instruments are expensive, and I just can't afford it. Never mind paying someone else $40/hour three times a week for lessons.
^ the above was me sounding like I know WTF I'm talking about.
