Just a thought here...
I'd guess Mulharney is legit. If he was corrupt, he wouldn't likely be arguing with his "Boss" so much. He might be lacking in "people skills" but I don't think he's for sale.
A lot of what happens next depends on whether Mulharney hates Red Cap gang members more than he does Royals, or his personal nemesis-of-choice Quentyn. And whether he saw the fight and has any respect for someone who'd jump into a fight to defend a child.
You know... The sort of thing a guardsman might do.
Completely unpredictable. I love it. Most webcomics, you can guess ahead of time what will happen. Not this one. You're a heck of a writer, Ralph.

Avoid those who speak badly of the people, for such wish to rule over you.
I voiced that opinion when I first saw the small size of the kit and the Royals hatband......when Quentyn first sees them/him.Jaydub wrote:Does anyone else think that the kit he may have saved is the same one who stole wildcard?

You need to remember that the kit is also a member of a rival gang, The Royals, who have cause their fair share of crime in The Tumbldowns...hence the purple hatband...that's probably why, if not the reason those 3 "brave" Red Caps were beating the crap out of him in such a brave and noble fashion.Dragoon The Griffin wrote:Granted Quenty has a shoody reputation, but the fact that he saved a kit may make up for that. Who are you going to believe, a kit or three obvious thugs?
Personal note: If Quentyn didn't inflict any serious or permanent injury on those cretins, they got off incredibly lucky and.....well, given the situation, he showed a helluva lot more restraint than I would have.

Well the kit is a gang member, many people have lost their lives thinking a gang banger is some innocent and harmeless kid.Dragoon The Griffin wrote:Granted Quenty has a shoody reputation, but the fact that he saved a kit may make up for that. Yes, sir. I agree completely. It takes a well-balanced individual... such as yourself to rule the world. No, sir. No one knows that you were the third one... Solidus. ...What should I do about the woman? Yes sir. I'll keep her under surveillance. Yes. Thank you. Good-bye...... Mr. President.

We don't know he is a gang member, he could easily be some dumb kid who wore the wrong color (sorta like how quenty got his sword stolen in the first place, the wrong color drawing unwanted attention.) Additionally from what we've seen of gang members they tend to wear their color a bit more prominently than just a purple hat band. I'm more than likely wrong, but just something to consider the posibility of.

What color was Quentyn displaying that got Wildcard stolen? WC was completely concealed and there was no hint of it's color showing. The kit that stole it was prospecting as an initiate into the Royals.....he picked Quentyn at random....he had no idea who he was or what he was carrying.Dragoon The Griffin wrote:We don't know he is a gang member, he could easily be some dumb kid who wore the wrong color (sorta like how quenty got his sword stolen in the first place, the wrong color drawing unwanted attention.) As for how Quentin is going to get out of jail if he can't pay the fine, I refer you to This comic. Now if I was a very grateful gang member with plenty of money on me for "just in case" I would think the least I could do would be to perhaps pay off the bail of the person who saved me (who might also be a good candidate to bring to the leader of the Royals...).

He's dead now, kicked a guard in the family jewels.

Can't honestly say Mulharny didn't deserve it. He wasn't even remotely interested in what had happened, just putting Quentyn back in the cage. He had no apparent interest in why the little kit looked so beat up, and why 3 obvious Red Caps were sprawled out in the ally.....just this obsession with Quentyn......which has now changed to having our hero's name at the top of Mulharny's "to kill" list.
"Soft headed Adjucator"??? It would seem that Mulharny doesn't have any respect for the local judicial bench either. I am beginning to believe my earlier hypothesis that Mulharny might actually be part of the problem was an accurate one. He's pointed out that Quehtyn hasn't been out of jail for more than a half-hour before getting involved in this fracas.....which leads me to think that he followed Quentyn as soon as he left the Guardhouse and quite probably saw most if not all of the incident.
If he isn't......well, I still think he deserved the boot to the 'nads for being such a narrow minded hard-head......and as a side benefit, Quentyn's "street cred" just got a major boost. I seriously doubt that any of the local gang members have actually assaulted a guardsman before.

Ouch....now that was bad.SolidusRaccoon wrote:Some good points Shar, still Q had a lot of balls to kick a guard in the balls.
But actually, I think it was more desparation than anything else. Being separated from WC for this long has to be starting to drive him up the walls by now, not to mention that he has every justification to believe that Mulharny "has it in for him"....if not before, most certainly now.
He just couldn't allow Mulharny to take him back to jail.....even if the Adjudicator would believe his story, Q's trying to keep his identity secret...not that Mulharny or anyone else for that matter would take him seriously.....the only one's who could actually vouch for his veracity would be the Millfolks and he truely does not want to involve them.
Quenty's in some seriously deep sh*t now though....assaulting a guardsman may have raised his 'street cred' as I mentioned and help grease the skids to get him into the Royals, but if he's ever caught again, he's gonna have one helluva hard time getting out of jail or even coming near convincing the Adjudicator that he's really a good guy.
Out of the deep fryer, into the blast furnace........

Yup he has at least a 2 star wanted level now. Well he is in the Royales now, saved a member and crotch kicked a cop, Now all he has to do is get wildcard back, and leave town. Withough the cops and the gang finding out who he really is. Maybe some dorky glasses will help.
